IMPORTANT NUANCES IN USING THE MEMORY CARD

  1. In addition to the amount of memory, the speed is also indicated on the surface of the product (to be precise, the class). So, if a flash drive has this indicator equal to 10, then data can be transferred to the device at a speed of 10 MB per second. It is worth considering which class is required for the normal operation of the gadget.
  2. A memory card for a phone with an adapter can be used as an SD. But, as already mentioned, it is not advised to do this due to the mismatch of the class of parts.
  3. The USB flash drive must be selected for compatibility. When a gadget that opens SDHC is used, it will be able to work with SD 1 or 1.1, but it will not work to read SDXC.

Laptops that are 7 or older can be equipped with standard card readers, but they cannot open SDHC. A card reader that connects via USB will help to solve the problem.   • Put a unique letter in the name, under which there are no sections yet.

  • Format the SD card using standard Windows tools or using special utilities. But it is worth considering that all files from the storage medium will disappear.

DRIVER PROBLEM

If you can connect the USB flash drive to the tablet, but not to the computer, then the necessary driver may be missing.

It happens that the employees of the hardware stores forget or do not want to install the necessary components and sell computers like that. The equipment must include CDs with drivers, the installation of which will not take much time. If the computer is not new, or the disk with "firewood" is lost, then the almighty Internet will help. In such a situation, restoring a micro sd flash drive is limited only to finding and installing components.

Today, the popularity of SD-flash drives, I think, is not inferior to USB-flash drives. Judge for yourself: phones, tablets, cameras, cameras - SD-flash drives are used everywhere (sometimes they are called SD-cards)!

In general, I must admit that SD-cards are quite "capricious" devices, and it is not uncommon for a computer not to recognize or see it. In these cases, usually, we immediately remember that there are important photos, files, data on the flash drive - which simply need to be 100% returned and restored!

In this article I will give the most common reasons for the invisibility of an SD card by a computer (laptop), as well as recommendations for eliminating them. I hope my humble advice will be useful to someone. So...

Many users confuse one point (although it is not the key one, it will help in solving the problem). I will show it on the example of one user question.

I took the card from my phone (microSD) and inserted it into my new device, but he offered to format it. Then I put it back in my old phone, but he also wanted to format it. My laptop also does not see this card and suggests formatting it. What to do? Help get the data back from the flash drive.

An illustrative case. The laptop sees your USB flash drive, and even offers to format it - i.e. he does not understand that there is data on it, he cannot recognize your flash drive, he cannot read the file system (in this case, the file system is marked as RAW).

This often happens due to:

  • failure of the file system on the flash drive;
  • Windows cannot read an unfamiliar file system (for example, it often happens with disks connected to a TV - it can reformat them into its file system, and then Windows does not see it).

By the way, many make one mistake when connecting microSD to a computer: when inserting a card into an adapter, they do not push it all the way (see photo-1 below). As a result, the PC simply does not see anything when the SD adapter is connected.

In this case, you can try to restore the operation of the flash drive and all the files on it using the utility for checking and correcting errors - chkdsk (built into Windows).

To do this, do not agree with Windows' suggestion to format the media (screenshot above), but just run command line (The easiest way: press Win + R, then enter CMD and press Enter, see the screen below).

An example of recovery is shown in the screenshot above. After such a simple procedure, the flash drive returned to its working state and functions normally to this day.

When the check is successful, usually the command line will report something like: "Windows checked the file system and found no problems. No further action required.".

As a rule, if there was a slight failure of the file system, then chkdsk it will be eliminated and the flash drive will become readable (after this procedure, both the phone and the laptop will be able to read it).

Recovering files from a flash drive

If, after trying to fix errors, Windows still intends to format it (i.e., the OS sees it, but does not recognize it), then first of all, I will recommend that you recover files from it (if, of course, you need them).

After you format the flash drive, it will be more difficult to recover data from it (and in the case of writing new files, it is completely impossible!).

Letter conflict: drive letter change

In general, when you connect a drive (including a flash drive) - Windows assigns a letter to this drive (for example, F :). But there is such a "glitch" that the letter is assigned incorrectly: for example, the one that is already in the system - as a result: a conflict occurs and your flash drive is invisible!

Therefore, if the flash drive is invisible, the first thing I recommend to do is to go to "Disk Management": see the drive letter, change it (it is possible to format the media).

1) To do this, first press the buttons Win + R, into line "Open" enter command diskmgmt.msc and press Enter.

2) Next, find in the list the disk (microSD card) that you do not see (is not visible). Right-click on it (sign-1 in the screenshot below) and select "Change drive letter or drive path" .

If in "Disk Management" the desired flash drive is not in the list, go to the next subsection of this article.

If the file system is marked as RAW, the flash drive must be formatted (more on this at the beginning of this article).

3) In the next step, press the button "Change" (number-1 in the screenshot below), then set the slider to "Assign drive letter (A-Z)" and choose some unique letter (the one that is not in the system). Agree to the changes made. Sometimes, you may need to restart your computer (laptop).

Classes and formats of SD cards

Sizes of SD cards

There are three form factors for SD cards: SD, miniSD, MicroSD (differ in size). To connect a microSD card to a laptop or computer, a small adapter is always included with it (see photo below).

Lack of drivers

It is possible that your flash drive is not displayed due to the fact that the drivers are not installed on the card reader. In this case, the card reader itself does not work, which means that it will not read the SD card either. In this case, usually, the flash drive is not visible in "Disk Management" and in device manager - a question mark will be lit in front of the device (it means that there are no drivers).

  2. Call up the menu "Run", to do this, press Win + R and introduce devmgmt.msc , press OK.

In the device manager, look at the "USB Controllers" tab, it should just be, something like "Realtek USb 2.0 Card Reader" (see screenshot below). No question marks or red icons should be lit in front of the device.

If you do not have a device (card reader) in the lists, and there are unknown devices with question marks (example -) - most likely you simply do not have a driver.

MicroSD

Cards of this form factor are popular among developers of portable electronic devices. Dimensions 11x15 mm allow you to use the memory in any device. A small piece of PCB can significantly expand the total memory pool of any device up to 128 GB (or even 256 if the device supports such a capacity).

MiniSD

This standard has long lost its former popularity, but is also used in portable electronics. It was ousted from the counter by a “competitor” represented by microSD. The dimensions are 21.5x20 mm.

SD

Cards of this type with dimensions of 32x24 mm are used in the dominant part of devices that require a large amount of external fast memory. Main scope of application:

Such cards have several generations, which characterize the maximum amount of stored information and the speed of reading / writing:

  • SD 1.0 - 8 MB - 2 GB (almost never used);
  • SD 1.1 - up to 4 GB;
  • SDHC - up to 32 GB;
  • SDXC - up to 2 TB.

Other important characteristics of choice

Volume isn't everything. There is also "class" - the minimum speed of reading and writing information. Now the most common type is "class 10", ie. data exchange rate not less than 10 MB / s. If you record video in 4K resolution, then purchasing "class 6" and even more so "class 4" is simply useless - the delays will be huge.

The second point is adapters and adapters. You can insert microSD into a special SD-adapter (can be included in the kit) and use such memory in everyday life, but the speed delay will come back to haunt instantly.

  • wrong volume letter;
  • driver.

Compatibility issues

All card readers, whether it is hardware built into the case of a PC or laptop, or an external device working via USB, are backward compatible. In other words, if it is designed to read data from SDHC cards, then it will work without problems with SD 1.0 / 1.1. But "making friends" with SDXC will no longer work - the technology is different, although the card looks identical to the others.

The problem is solved quite simply. It is enough to have at least one working connector in use USB 3.0 (version 2.0 lacks speed) and an external card reader, which is sold in any electronics store for a penny price.

Drive letter conflict

An SD card is the same drive, only solid state. It is detected by the system like HDD, SSD and DVD drive, i.e. gets its "letter". Often, registration is automatic and you don't even pay attention to it. The problem can arise in two cases:

  • 26 logical devices are connected to the PC (the number of letters of the alphabet);
  • the system refuses to register the drive itself.

In the first case, you will have to disconnect at least one disk / drive / flash drive, there are no other solutions. In the second, everything is a little more complicated, but fixable. If you are sure that the card is fully functional and visible on other devices, but not displayed on the working machine, do the following. Press the Win + R combination and write the command “ diskmgmt.msc»

We get into the disk management manager. All drives and other "letter" devices will be displayed here. Typically, you won't see A and B, since these characters are reserved for floppy drives. Even units that are not formatted and are not recognized by the system will be shown. Found your map (which you would like to rename first)? We do the following:

Change the letter to a unique one by right-clicking on the device and selecting the desired item in the context menu.

We format the card if it is new or does not contain any important data. If there is important information, dump it on a PC / laptop that can read the information. Formatting removes absolutely everything from the surface - remember that.

Do not forget to change the file system to NTFS (read files over 4 GB) and rename the drive itself (this makes it easier to recognize).

Drivers

Another popular problem that is also being addressed. Most often, it suffers from new equipment, only purchased in the store, or you installed a new version of Windows, but did not install all the components. Often the set includes an installation disc with all drivers and utilities. And what if you didn't put it in, or there is no floppy drive at all?

In this case, look at the name of your motherboard (PC) or laptop model. In the first case, we go to the site of the “mother” manufacturer and select the software necessary for our OS. In the second case, we do the same, but on the portal of the laptop manufacturer.

The second option is to open the device manager using Win + R and write “ devmgmt.msc».

Searching for "USB controllers" and seeing a yellow warning triangle that says no drivers are installed. We update and use. If the card reader is external, try looking for a driver for it - this can also solve the situation.
