Windows 10 maps does not show at home. Windows Maps

Microsoft's new Maps app has been designed for Windows phones, and because Windows 10 is a universal operating system, it also comes preinstalled on computers.

It's actually a pretty enjoyable app and turn-by-turn directions are just one of its features.

Let's take a look at what the Maps app has to offer.

Search.

The search function is more than just indicating your final destination. click on the search icon and enter something - an address, city, attraction name or category (for example, "restaurants in Moscow") and you will see results from the Bing search engine pop up in real time in the left sidebar. What you get will depend on what information you're looking for, but Bing will show similar results, including photos, Yelp reviews, and Wikipedia stats.

Directions.

Routes are by far the most important part of any map application, and the routes in the Maps application are fairly straightforward. Click on
to the route icon to connect to your current location and enter your destination and the app will suggest driving, public transport and hiking routes.

You also have the option to customize your route - drivers can choose to bypass toll roads, highways and tunnels, and for public transport, see routes that offer fewer changes or less walking time.

Favorites.

In the "Favorites" section, you will find your favorite / tagged places. You cannot add favorites from the Favorites section; to add something, you first need to find that place in the "Search" section, and then click on the star that appears under the name of that place. You can assign your nickname to this place and set it as your home or your workplace (although, in general, you can only have one home and one workplace).

The Favorites section has a vehicle location feature that allows you to add your vehicle's location so that you can remember where you parked your vehicle. To add the location of your vehicle, simply click on the "Add location" link and the application will register your current location, time and date. You can also add a photo (of your car or location; you probably want to add a photo to help you determine where you left your car) - "Add photo" link and specify the location on the map - "Adjust on map" link, in In this case, move the car icon on the map to the exact location.

3D cities (3D CITIES).

Fans of botanist mapping services will love this 3D city feature, which lets you explore hundreds of cities in photorealistic 3D images. To access this feature, tap the 3D city icon and navigate to the city you want to view.

You can also access 3D cities for any 3D captured city (only I didn't find Russian cities there). Click on the layers icon (in the right ruler with buttons) and switch to the "Aerial" view, and then click on the grid icon to see the city in three dimensions. You can move the panorama with the mouse, by pressing the right mouse button, you can rotate the view and with the left mouse button you can drag the map. Left-click on a street once to enter Microsoft's version of Panorama, also known as Street View.

Greetings! I'm Dave Alles, Partner and Team Leader on the Windows Maps team. Our team helps developers use the app CardsWindows and its underlying platform on all Windows 10 devices. We are continually working to release updates containing new features and improved card management capabilities based on feedback from Windows Insiders, app developers, and our customers.

We have a lot of updates, but first of all, I would like to discuss the ones that will help unleash the creative potential of each of us.

  • Handwriting in modeAerial. Personalize any map views by leaving notes on them with Windows Ink. Plan out-of-town trips, calculate distances and mark your lunch destination - made easier with the ability to write on the map just like using a pen.
  • Creation of your own collections. Places you want to visit during your trip, where you often visit with children, a selection of cafes for meetings - creating and organizing collections will help you be more organized and express yourself.
  • Ability to clarify card data... If you know the exact opening hours of a restaurant, or notice a road is not marked on the map, please let us know and help us make the maps more accurate, which will be useful for you and the community.
  • New opportunities for developers, such as a style API that helps developers customize the look of the map on the fly.

This is just the beginning. You will see even more new opportunities next year. Read this article to learn about the new mapping experience on all Windows 10 devices that is available as part of the Windows 10 Creators Update.

Basic improvements have made our maps clearer, more beautiful, and more realistic.

In the Windows 10 Creators Update, we continue to use data from Bing Maps and the HERE service. In addition, we retooled the platform Windows Maps with an updated pipeline to improve our global map data. Updated application subsystem Cards supports three-dimensional representation in mode Road (Road) - from mountains and valleys to highways that you drive every day - the app now better displays the dynamic terrain of the area.

1. Road view showing mountains and valleys in 3D

You may have noticed that the map in the view Road now looks different. For example, labels are positioned horizontally or vertically depending on the landscape to improve text legibility and image quality. We also changed the colors of the map a bit.

Card management tools enable multiple Windows applications, most notably the application itself Cards with many new features to help you get directions around the world on all your Windows devices.

Cards with any data entry method

We want to make interacting with maps intuitive and efficient whether you choose to input with a mouse, keyboard, touchpad, Surface Dial, or special tools like Narrator. Thanks to the latest updates, we have increased the availability of the app Cards as well as map controls in general. For example, screen readers now display more information about the state of the map when it is zoomed or rotated. Traffic information is now available in a new view Traffic (Traffic situation), which is called at each leg of the route and makes this information more accessible to all users.

Thanks to the capabilities of Windows Ink, you can add labels to the map just like you write with a pen on paper, and use the toolbar to change the color or thickness of lines, or delete unnecessary ones.

The toolbar also offers other handwriting capabilities that surpass conventional pen and paper: you can trace lines on the map to measure distance or quickly calculate directions.

With the release of the Windows 10 Creators Update, you can take full advantage of Aerial mode inking to personalize your maps.

Combine different handwriting modes to personalize your cards and write your plans on them. Even if your device does not support the pen function, you can still use the inking function with a mouse or touch.

Creating collections for different places

In addition to the pen function for personalizing maps, you can also save links to specific locations for later reference. Previously, you could add links to your favorites, but we received feedback that this is not enough. Not every place deserves to be added to your favorites. Therefore, we have added collections that allow you to save links to more locations and organize them into lists. You can also add notes to remember why you wanted to keep this place or who recommended it.

Create collections of locations you want to visit, or list them by city, and add notes for each location describing recommendations.

We've updated our Collections feature to take into account user feedback. We've updated the appearance of the most important locations you save - home, work, and car - so that they take up less space on the list and are easier to add in the first place. We received feedback that you need to save locations directly from folders Favorites and Collections and we have added this capability. Finally, you can now save your current location to the collection. Recently we are from the service HERE in the application Cards... Now you can also transfer all your collections. This way, if your saved locations are organized into collections, they can be imported in the same order. If you've imported them earlier as favorites, we'll help you get them organized.

Application Cards on different devices

An important feature of working on multiple devices is access to data regardless of which device you are using. All search results and saved locations stay with you across all of your Windows devices - not just PCs and phones, but Xbox and HoloLens, where Maps was made available as part of the Creators Update. The map platform is also available on IoT devices.

You can search for a restaurant on your Windows PC, and then the search results will be available on your Windows Phone when you hit the road. Your collections will also be available across devices, just like Bing Maps on the web, which you can open in any browser.

Windows Maps available on all Windows 10 devices, including Xbox. You can use this app and travel the world with your Xbox controller.

One of the most requested features from mobile users is the ability to better navigate the terrain. On phones and other devices with compass support, the app Cards now shows not only where you are, but which direction you are heading. Open up Cards and click the button Locate me (Show my location) to see your location. Pressing again Locate me application Cards will rotate and tilt the image as you move your device to show where you are looking.

Creating routes with multiple stops

We've received a lot of feedback from users that sometimes we need to plan multiple stops along the route. Therefore, the latest update to the app allows you to create driving and walking routes with multiple destinations. Now you can plan your trips with multiple stops to get things done. You can add destinations when planning a route, or right-click on the map and quickly select places from the context menu.

Create multi-stop routes by simply adding intermediate destinations.

Sometimes you need to get directions to an address in your contact list. We've made it easy so you don't have to switch between apps. Just enter the name or nickname of any contact you want to route to and the app Cards will extract the address from your contact list in the People app.

We've also made it easy to view the traffic on your regular commute to home or work at any time, as well as view the traffic cameras that interest you the most. Just press the button Traffic to see how long it will take to get home or to work, view traffic and crash reports on your route, as well as the latest images from the selected traffic cameras (where they are installed).

Instant view of location information

Now, in addition to the names of places on the map, you can immediately see other information, simply by hovering the mouse cursor over this icon on the map, for example, the rating of restaurants.

You can change the app mode to dark and change the map accordingly.

If you want, you can use a preset mode in the system for the Maps application, or always use light or dark mode. We've also added a dark theme for maps, with the roadmap displayed in dark tones to match the dark mode.

Making maps more accurate for everyone

The world around you is constantly changing, so sometimes you notice that the map data is not up to date. We often receive such feedback through Feedback Center, but sometimes it was difficult for us to respond quickly to incoming comments. Therefore, we added the button Suggest change (Suggest a fix) in the lower right corner of the map, which helps us to respond to your messages about outdated map data.

Now you can tell us if there is something wrong with the map, for example, there is no road on it or the name of the city is in another language. To do this, you need to point to this object and add a description of the error. You can also let us know if you cannot find the item you are looking for using the search function or if the search returns strange results, for example, the name of the hospital in the list of Italian restaurants.

We are pleased to see how much feedback is being received through this communication channel. By sending us your feedback using the button Suggest change directly from the app, you help us improve map data and improve map performance for everyone.

If you want to send feedback not related to card data, please use Feedback Hub where you can report a problem or send us your wishes. By selecting the item I have other feedback (

The universal Yandex.Maps application has received another update. You can download it through the app or download an updated version from the Microsoft Store. New maps and functions have been added to the software. Now the program will work on all devices of the ecosystem, including tablets, smartphones and other gadgets.

What's new in the Yandex.Maps app in Windows 10?

The universal Yandex.Maps app for Windows 10 has received many new maps. Now maps of more than 1863 cities of the world are available for viewing. They can be used both online and offline. It is enough to download a city map on your device in advance and search for streets, view the contact details of organizations, and plot routes. All maps are vector, and therefore their size is small. For example, the map of Moscow weighs only 159 MB, and the Leningrad region - 261 MB.

It's also worth noting that the search has been improved in this application. Now, with its help, you can find not only a house or apartment, but also a grocery store, pharmacy, cinema, ATM. The application will be able to find a suitable organization, show its exact address, time of work with clients.

Such a program will also be useful for tourists. All cafes, bars and restaurants will be displayed on the map with special signs. These signs will indicate the possibility of payment for services by bank card or money order. Also, some will receive a screen of the receipt, where you can see the cost of goods and services.

As for the preparation of routes, several options for this operation will be available in the application. The user will be able to compose both a walking route and a road, public transport. In this case, the map will display the optimal path, bypassing traffic jams and accidents. If it concerns movement around the city by public transport, then the program will display the appropriate numbers of minibuses, trolleybuses and trams.

For the maps of some cities, the function of viewing the movement of vehicles around the city in real time has also been added. This feature will only work when connected to a network.

In general, the updated program will help anyone find their way even in an unfamiliar city. The main thing is to download the map on time or have an Internet connection.

January 2015 saw the release of a new build of Windows 10 for Microsoft fans, which added a new maps app. In April we got the same application on our smartphones and now Microsoft has shared details about mapping applications in Windows 10 on computers and smartphones.

The Maps app is built on a universal app model and offers a consistent and flexible user experience across all types of Windows devices, whether you're using a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or PC. Maps have all the functions you need to explore the world around you. For the first time, Microsoft has integrated Bing Maps and HERE Maps for even better navigation. Applications are easily controlled using a mouse or touch gestures.

Maps includes Bing search, which pops up popular and recent searches by clicking on it, so you can quickly jump to the categories you want without having to type in the search box. The search comes out with very detailed information. You will see not only the map tag and contact information, but also images and recent user reviews. There will even be an opportunity to reserve a table in a restaurant or a hotel room (although it is not known how this will be implemented in Russia).

Once you've found the location you want, the maps will offer quick turn-by-turn voice navigation, whether you get to your destination on foot, by car or by public transport. The application automatically selects the best route based on the current state of traffic, but it is also possible to choose the conditions for laying the route yourself. Maps inherited voice navigation from HERE, as well as speeding warnings on the road.

Offline navigation has not gone anywhere, so you will have access to maps even if you are offline and do not have access to the network. Microsoft is also actively working on syncing all of your data, so that after you sign in with your account, all your marks and favorite places will be synced to your new device.

In addition to the preliminary version of maps on smartphones, Microsoft has made a number of changes to the application on the computer. Photorealistic 3D models have appeared in the application, which allow you to make virtual walks in various places in the world. More than 190 cities are currently supported. This mode is complemented by equally interesting 360-degree panoramas of streets and interesting places.

The development of new maps for Windows 10 is going on in an active way, so there are many more interesting innovations awaiting us. If you'd like to test the new app yourself, participate in the Windows Insider Program and install Windows 10 on your phone or PC. Then you can familiarize yourself with the maps on Widows 10.

What features do you want to see in new applications? Let us know in the comments.
