But I would like to start first of all with the most ordinary admiration. Underneath the humorous appearance (suffice it to say that here you can find a carnivorous chest or a living sword), hides one of the most beautiful and friendly Hack and slash RPGs the world has ever seen.

And if, due to some misunderstanding, you just now learned about the series from Runic, then do yourself a favor - go through the first part first. Only to see how much effort the creators put into the game, because it’s a game on a completely different scale.

Let's be honest: before the release of Torchlight, all Diablo clones, and Diablo itself, remained avant-garde. It was Runic who elevated the genre to the mainstream. It was the Schafer brothers who realized that the genre could simply be laughed at heartily; that it is not necessary to carry out all games of the genre in a harsh epic and pathetic vein - obese trolls and clumsy zombies are further confirmation of this; that the game could be made more hospitable (ridiculous system requirements and stable operation without a single patch speak for themselves) and friendlier (when loading, the game does not revive fallen enemies and revives you exactly on the part of the map where you stopped before exiting). All this simplicity only adds to the game's charm.

The creators acted so gracefully, avoiding a field full of bear traps with stickers “ambition” and “secondary”, and the tombstones of toothless diablo clones that fell into them, that they did not make almost a single mistake. If we don’t throw out leveling like Blizzard, then we won’t just copy it from the previous parts - we’ll leave strength, agility, magic and defense, but we’ll also add a fame scale - so that the famous hero earns additional points to develop his skills. If each class has only 3 skills, then all 3 are necessarily unique, while skills can be upgraded in any order, and not like in other games of the genre - going through a long chain from weak to powerful.

And there really are a LOT of skills here, and the way they are animated is simply magnificent. The engineer will build futuristic turrets, and the magician will surround himself with dead allies; the berserker will certainly be used by adepts of hand-to-hand combat, with all the ensuing consequences when the shooter (analogous to a demon hunter) works with firearms. But the authors did not force everything into the stupid conventions inherent in the genre - here, for example, you can find a scroll that any class can use on an equal footing. And now the berserker, surrounded by a crowd of faithful undead, shoots the monsters and showers them with a charge of electricity.

You will be assisted in all this by your faithful pet (now there are as many as 8 available to choose from), which has become a real calling card of the series. Add to this the fact that he can eat fish and turn into a tarantula or a mini-dinosaur, punish in every possible way the adversary who has encroached on the life of his owner and run into the city to throw all the unnecessary trash to the merchant - and you will get the opportunity not to stop clearing randomly generated dungeons for the tiring run to the city.

Well, it’s impossible to keep silent about the incredibly detailed world. If previously you were given, in fact, several multi-level dungeons, now you have access to a huge, detailed world with forests, deserts and frosty lands.

And where there are new locations, there will certainly be new enemies. The creators literally bend over backwards to surprise the player with their menagerie: animated mushrooms, human-sized tapeworms, gigantic insects. Moreover, this is not the entire list - there are truly no limits to the developers’ imagination.

Honestly, hand on heart, I’ll say one thing: after finishing the game, I had the desire to shake hands and sincerely thank every person who was in any way involved in the creation of the game, be it a tester, a level designer, or even a cleaner. After all, Torchlight 2 is the most ordinary fairy tale, and a deliberately naive one at that. Just observe the contrast the game is built on. Before the start of the battle, the location was a real underworld, giant tentacles were climbing out of the ground, and the local boss was trying to dismember you. But after you defeat him, the tentacles will certainly evaporate, instead of the boss, a unicorn will appear out of thin air, and a carpet of greenery will certainly cover the ground and everything around will bloom. After Diablo 2 (and no, there is no typo here) and the crowd of its imitators, who set the fashion for gothic style and pathos, this is a breath of fresh air (I apologize for this cliche, but that’s how it is).

Moreover, as you travel around the world of the game, you will definitely become a participant in some well-staged and acted scene. If you wander into an Aboriginal prison somewhere in the snowy mountains, you will certainly save someone from captivity. If you destroy a peacefully standing hut, then the disgruntled owners will run out of it screaming and screaming and try to shoot you. And if you finish off a particularly nimble monster, he will leave behind a portal that will take you to some hitherto unexplored land, and at the end of the map you will definitely stumble upon some rare and very valuable artifact, be it a stone, which you can then insert into the “loot” with connectors for it, or a particularly fancy hat. And it is from this, from the little things, that the game develops into something grandiose, something epic, like the elements of a puzzle into one monumental picture.

Blah blah blah. Alchemist blah, evil blah blah blah, threat to all living things blah blah. Blah. This is roughly how you can describe the entire plot of the game. And if we take into account that in games of this genre it is the tenth thing, then you can even go through the entire game without understanding who we were killing all this time and who we were saving, because the narrative in Torchlight 2, as in the first part, is completely optional - the more hilarious the attempts at plot in Diablo 3 look in the form of poor in-engine cutscenes and endless chatter.

In turn, the technical side deserves the most flattering reviews. Yes, the game cannot boast of rendered videos, physics and the degree of interactivity that was in the third part of Diabla. Instead, there is a modest, animated comic-style introductory video and pre-written animation, but the most paradoxical thing is that even in this form the game looks and plays really freshly. Concept art come to life – there’s no other way to describe the visual part.

Torchlight 2 is unique: a huge world has been created here, where both people and steampunks coexist, I’m not even afraid of this word... although no, I’m afraid of this word; in general, various kinds of creatures from all fantasy literature existing today coexist in one work, be it Tolkien’s zoo, futuristic robots or various kinds of “cute” living creatures, as if copied from an anime cartoon. Agree, to mix so many universes in one work, and at the same time present it all with humor (look at the character when you remove him - Stanislavsky would have given a standing ovation; look at the local NPCs - just look at the impudent cat with glasses covering half his face), - truly a daring act.

The musical accompaniment from Diablo 2 composer Matt Wellman could be released on a separate disc - the entire playlist combines both a frantic rhythm and measured, pathetic compositions. It’s impossible to put into words – I’ll just advise you to play with surround sound.

And finally, I would like to note the ideal interface - everything is clear even in English, the interface is simple and completely intuitive, and everything is done in a pleasant, clean font; without unnecessary ostentation and does not block the floor of the screen - fans of minimalism will freeze in ecstasy.

Alas, Torchlight 2 stopped one step away from the coveted “top ten” not because of the lack of a “seamless” world, or even because the main character repeats the tour from Diablo 2 - a captured village, a journey through the desert and an inevitable visit to hell ( more precisely, its likeness), but because of the ill-conceived multiplayer. The game does not have closed dedicated servers; protection from unscrupulous players is also not provided, because the game is distributed using a peer-to-peer system, depriving developers of the ability to control data integrity. As a result, only cooperative playthrough with friends of the same level, because the level of enemies is adjusted according to the creator of the session.

Having discarded all unnecessary conventions and cured the sores inherent in the genre, the developers left one thing - naked, undisguised addictiveness. “More exps! More weapons! More loot!” - you will shout with a feeling of unbearable hunger frozen in your pupils, waking up at four in the morning in front of the monitor. It is impossible to resist a perfectly calibrated mechanism - you won’t be able to stop, no matter how hard you try.

Blizzard is one of the few companies that DO NOT make bad games. Absolutely. Each project she has released is a whole world filled with amazing adventures, with its own exciting story and bright, often contradictory and ambiguous characters.

And yet, among these, without exaggeration, masterpieces, there is one game that is especially dear to the heart of almost every role-player. A game that even those who have a very vague understanding of video games have heard of, because it managed to take firm roots in modern popular culture.

Of course, we are talking about Diablo, whose dark setting and meaty gameplay served as a powerful source of inspiration for many game designers, screenwriters, directors, artists and even musicians!

It’s amazing how this seemingly simple toy eventually managed to become one of the most recognizable projects in the gaming industry. What is even more surprising is that, being within the framework of the unchanged concept laid down by the original back in 1996, each new part of Diablo managed to make a tangible breakthrough in the hack-and-slash genre and at the same time be completely different from its predecessor.

But what is not at all surprising is the rapid emergence of an army of “imitators”, some blindly copying the principles of gameplay, style and other distinctive elements of the series, while others tried (and often unsuccessfully) to add something of their own.

12. Torchlight

Let's start with the RPG that is more similar to Diablo 2 than any other. It would probably be more correct to talk here about how these games differ from each other, because Torchlight, by and large, is an almost exact copy of Diablo (of course, with its own setting and plot).

This similarity is not accidental: the same people who took part in the creation of the first and second parts of Diablo worked on the game.

8.Titan Quest

Action/RPG, whose setting is rich in borrowings from ancient mythology. Moreover, the authors often gave them their own interpretation, changed beyond recognition, which is why the world of Titan Quest turned out to be very bizarre, successfully combining traditional fantasy elements and mythological ideas of Ancient Egypt, Greece and Mesopotamia.

The huge world, divided into three acts, and the epic plot telling about the confrontation of the earthly hero with the gods and titans, evokes certain associations with “Oblivion”. Even the depiction of local locations and some opponents immediately evoke certain images from the RPG loved by many. In all other respects, Titan Quest is a typical hack & slash game.

7. Victor Vran

A project from a new generation of “Diablo-like” games, most similar to Diablo 3.

Victor Vran does not have the usual system of character classes, but there is a huge selection of weapons, divided into seven types, and armor, which determine the style of play, giving the hero a set of unique attacks. There are also many activated abilities called "demon powers" and "fate cards" that provide passive bonuses.

The gameplay of Victor Vran is highly dynamic: the hero can evade enemy attacks, quickly move around locations and even jump. The latter ability is useful not only in battle, but also for finding secrets and even solving some puzzles.

The rest of the game is a standard hack-and-slash with an isometric view.

6. Grim Dawn

One of the most interesting games like Diablo 3, constantly updated and improved by its creators (Crate Entertainment). It deserves attention due to its stunningly detailed open world in the style of dark fantasy, an interesting plot telling about the confrontation between a handful of surviving people and several ominous opponents, modern, stunningly beautiful graphics and special effects.

Traditionally for games like Diablo, Grim Dawn features a large selection of weapons, armor and accessories, and a variety of different enemies, including bosses and champions. The role-playing system deserves special attention, allowing you to combine any two of the classes presented here into one hybrid. In total, the developers claim more than two hundred abilities that can be improved with special items and constellations (a unique system of passive skill improvement).

There are also several factions, improving your reputation with them will give you access to useful in-game items. There is even some semblance of non-linear quest completion, although it has virtually no effect on the gameplay.

For those who find playing through the story campaign not enough, Grim Dawn has an arena mode called “The Crucible.”

5. The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing

A role-playing game in which the main character is the famous hunter of evil spirits. The project has an appropriate setting: gloomy, fog-covered, mountain ranges and dark forests expanses of the fictional Borgovia, where Doctor Helsing will have to fight hordes of a variety of creatures.

At the same time, in this world, magic calmly coexists with science, which is why in Adventures of Van Helsing you constantly encounter various ingenious mechanisms driven by steam power, and even firearms.

And almost all the local dialogues and plot events are full of healthy humor and self-irony. Particularly amusing are the conversations between the braggart Helsing and his companion Katarina, imbued with cynicism and sarcasm, who is a real ghost.

Three available classes (mage, warrior and marksman), hundreds of pieces of equipment, various tasks, an accessible and understandable role-playing system and much more await players in this wonderful RPG.

4. The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing 2 and 3

The final two parts of The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing trilogy, continuing the events of the original and opening up new corners of Borgovia for exploration with its frightening secrets and eerie technologies. Even more enemies, more quests, items, alchemical recipes and mini-games like "Tower Defense" await players here.

The basic concept has remained unchanged, so the game can be recommended to everyone who liked the adventures in the company of Doctor Helsing and his companion Katarina.

3. Divine Divinity

Those who have spent more than one hour in Divine Divinity will say that this game does not have as much in common with Diablo as other projects on our list. This is true, however, when the game first came out, it was dubbed a clone of Blizzard’s unforgettable brainchild, without even having time to really understand it.

This RPG really looks very similar, the maps seem almost the same as what we have already seen in Diablo. There are also plenty of battles with heaps of monsters here. What sets Divine Divinity apart is its high-quality role-playing component. The developers managed to create and describe a world that you want to explore, to come up with a story whose ending you are afraid to know. Among the undoubted advantages of the game are also colorful characters, subtle humor and a pleasant atmosphere of a solid classic RPG.

2.Nox

This RPG came out even a little earlier than the legendary second part of Diablo, moreover, among all the clones of the great and terrible Nox, it is perhaps the most successful.

The battles here are really interesting - the opponents have some kind of brain, so they can run away if they smell something fried, or eat something useful in battle. As for magical abilities, in addition to the usual spells that act once, there are also long-lasting ones - the hero casts either while the player presses the button, or until the mana runs out. What adds realism to what is happening on the screen is that enemies can hide in some bushes and suddenly jump out of them, and the hero cannot be completely protected from this.

It’s also nice that the settlements in Nox are much more vibrant than in Diablo, so exploring the cities is a separate pleasure.

1.Path of Exile

The game that comes closest to the Diablo series in terms of atmosphere and quality of gameplay.

The world of Path of Exile is literally filled to the brim with cruelty and hopelessness. There is black magic everywhere, reviving corpses, ancient dark deities and so on. Perhaps, with just one elaboration of the game environment, this RPG could have been sent to the top.

In addition, the game offers as many as seven playable characters to choose from with a deeply developed leveling system. Each person's abilities depend on the stone inserted into their equipment, as well as on a tree of more than a thousand (!) passive skills, activated by distributing skill points. This didn't even happen in any of the three Diablo games.

The main difference between these two hack-and-slash RPGs is that Diablo has always been, in general, a serious, in some places even a gloomy story about the struggle between Good and Evil. While the creation from Runic looks more like a cartoon based on a similar story.

Perhaps this was the idea - to make not a clone, but the most convenient to operate and navigate, the simplest meat grinder, where you only need to press one button on the mouse in order to cover vast distances and mow down thousands of monsters on your way. Torchlight II has become even simpler, and thus, today it is the most elementary and at the same time very dynamic RPG with a concentrated chopping of everything that moves.

The essence of the game

It differs favorably from its older brother in that you don’t even try to somehow notice the narrative in it. It's already strange to take another story about saving the world from some villain seriously in 2012, and the good thing about this game is that this brain activity is not required at all. Dialogues can be skipped instantly; they contain nothing but cliched phrases and funny jokes. Completing tasks will in no way satisfy players thirsting for adventure and noble heroism. They are here solely for gaining experience and mandatory leveling.

The developers, in order to completely turn gamers into lazy “supermen,” even provided the possibility of turning in extra clothes in the city with the help of a pet. For the sake of interest in such an assistant, we added a couple more animals, like a wolf and a panther. If you set the game difficulty to maximum, their help can come in handy in the heat of battle, because it is possible to turn them into other animals!

Gameplay

But again, this was done as a joke, to make it more fun to run through endless locations. Moreover, regardless of the class of the chosen hero, the process of clearing levels looks approximately the same. Each warrior has both melee and ranged attacks, only the types of skills and the weapons used differ. This year, brass knuckles, which were in Diablo 3 from the monk and are present in Torchlight II at the warrior.

Magic is standard - depending on the chosen branch, you can set enemies on fire, freeze, slow down, strike with lightning, and so on. Even poison, although such tricks have been introduced in the genre for quite a long time. Of course, spied on Blizzard and a kind of rage bar, which allows you to temporarily enhance attacks and characteristics. But all this works and is only needed at a high level of difficulty; at the first two, everything comes down to an unstoppable hero who, like a combine harvester, moves through the levels, and even the “bosses” cannot stop him.

Advantages and disadvantages

Of course, they are traditionally much stronger than ordinary monsters; they need to be bludgeoned for a long time, not forgetting at such moments about bottles with a healing potion. But essentially the cleaning process has not changed at all. By the way, one of the advantages Diablo 3 in the background lies precisely in the absence of bottles; collecting the vital energy of defeated enemies is a very good find. This game is a very high-quality and fun copy of the hack-and-slash RPG of the early 2000s - late 90s. And it will appeal to everyone who loves this genre, because against the backdrop of newfangled role-playing games with open worlds and clever plots, such simple meat grinders are almost a rarity. However, the distribution of experience points, for example, is implemented so that the player has to choose between his preferred skill. You can't upgrade everything for it to work effectively. Either you swing one branch, or a little at a time, but in the second case it will be much harder to chop.

Peculiarities

It’s better to choose the class you like, level up to the maximum in the direction you like, and run through the game. And then go through it again in a different way. In this regard, replay value Torchlight II quite good. Despite the not particularly outstanding design of the locations. IN Diablo 3, for example, there are few locations, but everything is drawn by hand, every corner is thought out. At the brainchild Runic Games, of course, everything is much simpler. This is more of a copy-paste of several scenery familiar to the gamer, such as green meadows, dark dungeons, and so on.

Despite this approach, the game will easily take 15-20 hours for a single playthrough - this is not a standard action game for a couple of evenings. The developers, of course, could not create a new masterpiece in two years or replay the first part, say, twice. But the second Torchlight has become better in almost everything: it has more space, more monsters, more opportunities for leveling up, it has become even more dynamic. And this is just on topic while gamers are waiting for new ones TES and, for example, Divinity Sin.

General impression

Not to mention very dark and violent Path of Exile, which is close to release. If you don’t want to spend a lot of time playing alone, it makes sense to try yourself in a cooperative game. Co-op, it seems, will soon take over absolutely all games, and it may come to the point that developers will stop coming up with new features for one player. Most likely, the trend of trying to force players to entertain themselves online at the expense of the “crowd” will continue.

But in the case of this there is nothing wrong with this. After all, the game offers both a decent single-player campaign and high-quality multiplayer. And its scale will be the envy of any ordinary RPG, if we are not talking about the flagships of the genre. Like Borderlands 2, this September - an excellent continuation of a good game from two years ago. But by the third coming we will be expecting something new from such releases.

The project is unusual due to its world. The gameplay here is very familiar - the local weirdos, of course, are not fantasy (as in most games a la Diablo), but they chop in the same way. And the plot is not bad. 7. Revenant

An unusual and very dark game. Our main character is a resurrected warrior of antiquity, who was called to solve some... problems of the local ruler. The usual problems - the next Great Evil wakes up and the like in the same spirit. Another project like “Diablo, but only with humor.” Funny drawing, humorous plot and, in general, a lot of so-called banter. The style of the game is not purely fantasy - there is also everyone’s favorite steampunk. There are three classes here, and each has its own methods of exterminating enemies. The quality of the project is very high, because it was made by the same people who participated in the creation of the first two parts of Diablo. 5. The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing

In this game we will play as the descendant of the famous hunter of evil spirits. Our character happily engages in the family craft, very successfully exterminating various otherworldly horrors throughout Europe. His companion is the ghostly Lady Katarina, who greatly enlivens the game. Despite the fact that sometimes you regret that she is already dead - you want to kill her again for some of her sarcastic comments. In general, the plot in the game is made in the spirit of classic Gothic and, frankly, is simply gorgeous. The project, of course, is not without its shortcomings, but it’s definitely worth playing. By the way, the developers promised a trilogy, so we are waiting for a continuation.

Not a bad game with an open world, several very interesting characters and a not bad plot. Each hero has his own story, his own equipment and skills, as well as his own unique gameplay. For example, a vampire can play either as a classic melee warrior, or as... a vampire. That is, something like a dark magician with his own special abilities. But the elf is a typical archer, whose main task is to keep enemies away from her. The game also has a second and third part, but the first one can be called the most successful.

3. Dungeon Siege

Yes, the same one Dungeon Siege. One of the first games to truly develop the concept of Diablo. Leveling system in style TES(what we use is what develops), many interesting partners (you can play alone, but putting together a squad is much more interesting) and a beautiful, open world. The basis of the gameplay remains, as always, the destruction of various monsters. It’s worth talking about the beauty of the world separately - at the time of release Dungeon Siege I was amazed by its graphics, and even now you can appreciate the amount of work that designers and programmers did. By the way, the game also has a second and third part, which are also quite good. Do not miss.

2. Divine Divinity

The first game in the famous series Divinity, ancestor of everyone's favorite Divinity: Original Sin. At first glance, this is the same Diablo. Familiar gameplay with slashing monsters, familiar fantasy world, three classes of characters. But once you take a closer look, you realize that not everything is so simple. Many quests are made in the style of the best classic RPGs, where the ability to find non-standard solutions and convince other characters is important; there are everyone’s favorite “moral choices” (many years before Mass Effect and other modern RPGs), and implemented at the highest level. Each class can be upgraded the way you want (that is, you can choose your own skills). And the plot in the game is simply great. All in all, this is a must-know classic.

A worthwhile plot, very nice graphics, and a truly original skill tree and exchange system. There are several hundred passive skills in the game (!), and there are more than one or two dozen upgrade options for each class.
