FAQ Skyrim - Blacksmithing. Blacksmithing leveling and tips The elder scrolls v skyrim weapon improvement

Smithing

Unlike other Elder Scrolls games, weapons and armor in Skyrim do not degrade with use and therefore do not need to be repaired. The Repair skill is replaced here by the Blacksmithing skill, which is simply necessary for a character who is passionate about creating and improving weapons and armor.

Leveling up the Blacksmithing skill:

Creating (or crafting) items in forges gives the greatest increase in skill; after the release of patch 1.5, its increase is directly dependent on the cost of the items created - the higher it is, the more the skill grows. Upgrading items on workbenches and grindstones increases skill depending on the added value of the item being upgraded.

Blacksmithing can only be done in certain places, such as equipped forges, anvils in camps, etc., where you can find several types of tools:

  • Forge or Anvil (Anvil): used to create new weapons and armor. What you can create is determined by your perks.
  • Grindstone: sharpens weapons to increase the damage they deal. The higher your skill, the more weapon damage increases.
  • Workbench: allows you to improve your armor. The higher your skill, the more your armor class increases.

The materials used in the process of crafting weapons and armor are made on other equipment:

  • Tanning Rack: tanning leather from hides and cutting it into strips.
  • Smelter: Smelting pieces of ore of various metals and Dwemer scrap metal into ingots.

I would especially like to note that smelting metals in smelters and tanning leather on tanning machines does not increase the Blacksmithing skill.

Blacksmithing Skill Perks

The Blacksmithing perk tree consists of 10 perks that require a total of 10 perk points. It's shaped like a circle, but it's actually two different paths that end with the same ability to craft light and heavy Dragon Armor, the best armor in the game. There is a small branch on the tree that provides the ability to improve enchanted armor and weapons - the Blacksmith Wizard perk.

You can take all 10 perks, but for most it will be enough to master one of two branches - either the left (mainly represented by light armor) or the right (heavy armor). The left branch is shorter and requires one perk point less than the right branch to achieve the ability to create dragon armor. Since the left branch of the perk tree includes plated heavy armor (Advanced Armor Types perk), it can also be a good choice for fans of heavy armor.

It is also worth mentioning that the reduction in damage taken by a character due to armor protection stops at armor class 567, and this value can be achieved by many game armors, provided sufficient attention is paid to their improvement.

An important difference between the left and right branches of the perk tree is the weapons available for crafting. Ebony and Daedric weapons are more lethal than glass ones, which are the best offered by the left branch. However, when the quality of a weapon is upgraded to legendary, the difference in damage between glass and Daedric weapons will be less than 10%. The official Dawnguard plugin, in addition to crafting all kinds of arrows, adds the ability to create the most powerful dragon weapons.

Quality of weapons and armor

The game has 6 levels of quality for weapons and armor: Good, Excellent, Best, Flawless, Epic and Legendary. Quality levels are unlocked when the character reaches a certain level of the Blacksmithing skill, which also depends on whether the character has the corresponding perks (see the table in the spoiler below).

For example, with a Smithing skill of 60, the necessary materials and the Orc Armor perk, you can upgrade Orc armor to Flawless, and Ebony armor only to Excellent.

The Smithing skill can be raised above 100 by using enchanted items and potions with the Fortify Smithing effect, allowing you to reach Epic or Legendary quality for any item. Enchanted items can be found randomly somewhere or bought, and the alchemical ingredients that will make a potion with this effect can be selected using the Skyrim ingredients filter or the alchemical calculator.

Fast leveling up your Blacksmithing skill

To speed up your skill leveling, you should take the blessing of The Warrior Stone (+20% to the growth rate of all combat skills) and have a good rest (from +5% to +15% to the growth rate of all skills for 8 hours). You should also complete the quest “Unfathomable Depths” as early as possible in order to obtain the “Ancient Knowledge” effect (+15% to the growth rate of the Blacksmithing skill).

  • The Embershard Mine near Riverwood and the Halted Stream Camp near Whiterun are places where a low-level character can mine a lot of iron ore.
  • A convenient place to level up the Blacksmithing skill is the Warmaiden's in Whiterun, as there is access to all the equipment and two merchants: Adrianna Avenicci outside and Ulfbert the Furious Bear inside.
  • The hides weigh less (half or less) than the leather made from them. Therefore, it is more profitable to carry skins in your inventory and make leather from them immediately before creating or improving items.
  • At the top of the Throat of the World you can find a special pickaxe enchanted with +5 to the Smithing skill - Notched Pickaxe.

Before patch 1.5: skill growth depended on the number of items created, so it was possible to stamp iron daggers on an industrial scale, which required only iron ingots and strips of leather. It is also worth noting that iron daggers are beneficial for leveling up the Enchanting skill, and you will make a small profit even by buying materials for stamping daggers and empty or filled tiny soul stones from traders.

After patch 1.5: The cost of the items created began to be of decisive importance, so the production of iron daggers, priced at 10 gold apiece, which was put on stream, will give a very small increase in the Blacksmithing skill and can no longer be used to quickly level it up. However, this skill can still be leveled up quite quickly by making jewelry. A good way (an additional effect will also be an increase in the Alteration and Speech skills): look into the Halted Stream Camp, located north of Whiterun, and find in the mine of this camp a volume of the Transmute Mineral Ore spell, with which you can transform iron ore into silver, and silver into gold. Considering the abundance of iron ore in the game, it will be possible to flood all Skyrim markets and shops with jewelry. Moreover, adding various precious stones to the product, which often fall out during ore mining, significantly increases the cost of the finished jewelry, so this should be used;)

EXTRACTION OF MATERIALS, part 2

Materials and Metals

Materials

Iron, Steel, Corundum, Silver and Gold
Steel does not have its own ore, and carbonization of iron is unknown in Tamriel, so steel is obtained by alloying corundum and iron ore. Since iron is used in greater quantities than steel, you should not overdo it when creating steel. Moreover, corundum is also used in the most advanced steel armor. It is best to stick to a 3-2-1 ratio between iron, steel and corundum in ingot form.
Iron can also be transmuted through the Transmutation spell (see below) into silver and gold, which is beneficial primarily for the mass leveling of Blacksmithing (through the creation of jewelry).

Gold and silver bars are not used in creating and improving weapons and armor (with the exception of).

Iron is the most popular metal in the game, as it is needed for the production of almost all weapons and armor of classical technologies - Dwemer, Elven, Orc and Dragon Scale. Steel is required when creating and improving steel, imperial and complex types of armor and weapons, and in Dwemer technology.

Dwemer Metal
Dwemer metal can only be obtained by melting down Dwemer scrap metal and technical components of Dwemer equipment; they can also be found in finished form in Dwemer ruins and on sale. The largest amount of scrap metal and ingots is located in Colcelmo's Laboratory in Markarth, however, the entire room can be easily explored only by completing a mini-quest (kill the spider in the ruins of Nchuandzel) or successfully convincing him (or after completing the quest "Book of Love" - take it to the sanctuary of Mara in Riften). Entrance to Colselmo's laboratory itself is only possible during the course of the quest for.
Below are Dwemer metal scraps that can be melted down. However, only the lightest elements make sense to collect, since they have the best ratio of scrap metal weight to the number of original ingots.

Orichalcum
Orichalcum is exploited in Skyrim almost 100% by orcs in their fortresses. Therefore, if you are going to mine this metal, you should become a blood relative of the orcs. Orichalcum is used exclusively when creating and upgrading orcish armor. The veins of orichalcum are called "outlets" of orichalcum.

Mercury
Mercury ingots are used exclusively in the production and upgrade of elven weapons. In Skyrim, this metal is quite rare, but there are still mines for its extraction.

Moon rock
Moonstone in a refined version is used in Elven weapons and armor and in Glass weapons and armor. Despite its fairly high demand, moonstone is not mined in Skyrim; there are several wild veins in different places in the region.

Malachite
Malachite in its purified form is the main component of all Glass armor and weapons. Malachite is even rarer in Skyrim than ebony, since this metal is mined in only one mine.

Ebonite
Ebony Ore is a strange volcanic glass, especially favored by the Daedra and Dremora. The most powerful armor and weapons - Daedric and (second in strength and quality) ebony - require a fairly large amount of ingots of this rare metal. And yet, despite the legendary nature of the substance, the material is easy to buy from almost all blacksmiths and ordinary merchants (after level 40), and there are deposits of the material in several locations. In addition, there are two active mines in which you can stock up on ebonite very well.

Dragon Scales and Bones
With the arrival of dragons in Skyrim, blacksmith research on their super-strong shell appeared. Blacksmiths will be able to create light or heavy dragon armor using the scales (Dragon Scale and Dragon Shell Armor) and bones (Dragon Shell Armor) of legendary lizards. Since the supply of dragons is practically unlimited (even after the end of the main story), both types of materials are available on demand.

With the exception of iron and a few Dwemer metal items, smelting requires 2 pieces of ore to produce one ingot.

Melting Tips

The smelters in the game are no different from each other. Ore into ingots can be heated in the same way at the entrance to any mine as in the main cities.

Smelting metals DOES NOT AFFECT your Blacksmithing level.

Stolen ingots can be used to craft or upgrade weapons and armor without the risk of having stolen equipment in your inventory. Stolen raw ore can be melted into "legal" ingots.

The value of an ore is not only an indicator of its rarity or parity in relation to other ores/ingots, but also an effective method of giving the player the opportunity to take ingots and ore from friendly NPCs. Almost all of Dovahkiin's friends give him the opportunity to take free ingots up to orichalcum, and ores up to malachite and mercury.

All types of ore can be profitably sold to foremen hanging around the mines. For example, iron can be sold for 20 septims, versus the usual 7.

The Transmutation spell from the school makes it possible to melt an ingot of iron into silver, and an ingot of silver into gold. Unfortunately, transmutation occurs automatically and only one ingot at a time. Therefore, if you do not constantly throw silver out of your inventory, the easiest way is to pump iron into gold. However, this is not recommended at first, since iron is a very popular metal for blacksmithing, while silver and gold are primarily used for “empty” pumping of Blacksmithing through the mass procurement of rings and amulets.

Tanning Machine

Tanning machine
Tanning machines are available in almost all settlements. Just like smelters, the starting product is indicated in a list, and the required ingredients are displayed only by selecting the product.

Unlike smelters (which display all smelting options), tanneries by default only allow you to create 4 strips of leather from one piece of leather (this is the only method to get strips other than buying from hunters and loot) - you must have a piece of leather in your inventory to create strips from it). To create the pieces of leather themselves, animal skins are used, but only if they are in the player’s inventory.

By default, the skins of foxes, deer, and wolves give 1 piece of leather per skin. Goats need to be skinned twice to get one piece of leather. Horses and cows give 3 pieces of leather per hide. All types of saber-tooth and bear give the most - 4 pieces of leather.
Pieces of leather are required to create and upgrade leather, riveted and rawhide armor. Leather strips are required to craft and upgrade iron gear, riveted armor, steel plate armor, and regular steel armor and weapons. Imperial and lamellar armor require both leather and stripes.

Tanning machines are no different from each other. Any tanning machine can tan the same amount of leather from animal skins.

Working on a tanning machine DOES NOT AFFECT your Blacksmithing level.

BLACKSMITH CRAFT

Forge

In the forges of Skyrim, you can create weapons and armor using raw materials such as leather, strips of leather, Daedra heart and metal ingots. Wood (despite the fairly large amount required for many shields) is not used, with the exception of Cleavers, which can be upgraded using firewood.
By activating the forge, you can select the category (technology) of the weapon or armor to be created from the list on the left. The more perks taken in the Blacksmithing skill, the more crafting recipes available. By default, only recipes for leather, rawhide, riveted, imperial and iron equipment and jewelry are available. All technologically advanced recipes become available in forges only through the perks of the Blacksmithing skill.

Forges in Skyrim provide the same opportunities (including the Lunar Forge in the ruins near the Silent Moons camp), with the exception of the Heavenly Forge - in it and only in it you can create ancient Nordic armor and the hero's Nordic weapons. In terms of strength, ancient Nordic armor is inferior to steel if the “Steel Armor” perk is pumped up and to steel plate with the “Complex Types of Armor” perk. Nordic weapons are positioned differently in terms of strength (see).

Forging new items in a forge does not depend in any way on the level of Blacksmithing - the level does not affect the quality or strength of the armor or weapons created. Skill perks only affect the availability of certain recipes for creating equipment. At the same time, creating items in a forge is the fastest way to level up your skill. For the fastest “improvement” of a skill, gold and silver bars are used: jewelry is “stamped” in large quantities (then it is profitable to enchant and sell them), or types of weapons that require the least materials are often a dagger or a bow (you can read more about these weapons in the Encyclopedia of Perks

We recognize the “handedness” of a weapon by its name or (if the name is unclear) by the position of the weapon in the item’s window. Two-handed weapons are positioned diagonally, one-handed weapons are positioned vertically.

The order of recipes in the Forge does not always correspond to the order of strength of armor and weapons. The relative quality of armor and weapon strength are detailed in the Perks Encyclopedia.

In the game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, we have the opportunity not only to create our own weapons and armor, but also to sharpen weapons and improve armor in the forge. The higher the hero’s blacksmith skill, the better the improvement will be.

Upgrading weapons and armor

In addition to directly creating weapons and armor, we can improve these very weapons and armor. To do this, you will have to find special places, which are most often located near the forge.

Sharpening stones

Using whetstones we can sharpen melee weapons such as swords, axes and hammers. In addition, bows can also be improved. For sharpening, we will be required to provide a certain amount of one or another material (iron ingot, silver ingot, etc.). As a result of these manipulations, the damage rate increases significantly with a high level of blacksmithing skill.

Crafting table

At workbenches we improve our armor (gloves, boots, helmets, shields, etc.) We will also need materials and the quality of the improvements will depend on the skill level.

Where to get the required resources

We will need resources both to create items and to improve and sharpen them. Where can I get them? The easiest way is to buy what we need from the blacksmith; most often, the player’s level of pumping corresponds to the seller’s assortment, but in addition to this, you can also find the following on your way:

Ore mining

We will often be given tasks related to clearing out a particular mine. In these mines you can often find various veins of metals. Here we kill 2 birds with one stone - we extract the necessary metal and, as a bonus, often precious stones. It should be noted here that for this process you will need a pickaxe, which, most often, carefully lies somewhere nearby.

Ore processing

Well, after that we will need to find a smelting furnace in which we will be allowed to bake the required ingots from ore.

Using a skill

You can forge objects only in special places - forges. There are several types of tools available at the forge:

  • Grindstone (orig. Grindstone) : Allows you to sharpen weapons, thereby giving them more damage. The higher your Blacksmithing skill level, the more damage your weapon will deal.
  • Crafting table (orig.Workbench) : Allows you to upgrade your armor. The higher your Smithing skill level, the stronger your armor will be.
  • Forge (orig.Forge) : Allows you to create new weapons and armor from raw materials. The range of what you can create is determined by your perks.
  • Anvil (orig.Anvil) : Same as blacksmith's forge.

It should be noted that the production of raw materials occurs with the help of other tools, the use of which is not included in the concept of Blacksmithing.

  • Tanning stand (original Tanning Rack) : Allows you to obtain leather and strips of leather from hides; skins can be removed from captured or found dead animals.
  • Smelter (orig.Smelter) : Allows you to cast ingots from ore or Dwemer debris; ore is mined in mines using a pickaxe; Dwemer debris can be found in Dwemer ruins. As a rule, a free pickaxe (weight - 10) can always be found directly in the mine, so it is not necessary to carry it with you (note: there are also outlets of mineral and ore veins in the Black Reach).

Having upgraded your blacksmith skill to 100% and received all the blacksmithing perks, you already receive quite powerful equipment at the forge.

However, the quality of weapons and armor can be improved even further by using potions and enchanted items.

Here are some tips on how to effectively organize this process:

  • To increase your blacksmith skill, you can enchant the following items:
  • Ring.
  • Necklace.
  • Gloves(mittens).
  • Cloth(armor).
  • The effects of increasing the blacksmith's skill from these items when equipped are cumulative (unlike potions, where one or ten bottles drunk do not play any role - the total effect will still be the same as from one bottle).
  • Of course, in order for the contribution of each equipped item to be as high as possible, it is necessary to develop the enchantment skill to 100% and obtain all the corresponding perks. There is no clothing that increases enchanting skill, but you can create a potion.
  • To create enchanting potions, you will need any two of the following ingredients:
  • Blue butterfly wing(Blue Butterfly Wing, 4th effect, FormID = 000727de)
  • Sorcerer's Claw(Hagraven Claw, 3rd effect, FormID = 0006b689)
  • snow berries(Snowberries, 2nd effect, FormID = 0001b3bd)
  • Spriggan sap(Spriggan Sap, 2nd effect, FormID = 00063b5f)
  • In order for the potion to be as “strong” as possible, the character must develop

At the forge you can create new weapons and armor. The higher your blacksmithing skill, the better weapons and armor you can forge. This skill increases by creating or upgrading weapons and armor, taking lessons from a teacher, or reading educational books.

Crafting weapons and armor requires components found in the world, such as iron or steel, as well as knowledge of how to craft the appropriate item. To create new types of weapons and armor, choose new abilities in the blacksmithing constellation.

Sharpening stones

Increases damage done by weapons. To sharpen a weapon, you need the appropriate material. The level of improvement when sharpening depends on your skill in blacksmithing and special abilities.

Crafting table

Increases armor class. To improve your armor you need consumables. The level of improvement depends on your blacksmithing skill and special abilities.

First steps in blacksmithing

You will be able to find the necessary equipment and get acquainted with the basics of blacksmithing along the main storyline, almost immediately after completing the task “To Freedom!” In Riverwood, talk to Alvor he will give you a task to create and improve weapons and armor, and all the necessary ingredients for this.

Also, don’t forget to buy a pickaxe from him - it will be useful for mining ore.

Ore mining

In your travels, mainly in various dungeons, you will come across various “veins”, for example, “Iron Ore Vein”, using this stone, if you have a pickaxe with you, your character, after working a little, will extract some ore, and possibly some kind of precious stone:

After which, the ore must be smelted in a smelter. One of them can be found in Whiterun, on the right immediately at the entrance to the city:

Also, ore is sold from blacksmiths, and, in smaller quantities, “in all sorts of things.”

Upgrade to 100

Blacksmithing is perhaps the easiest skill to level up to 100. All you need is 10,000-20,000 gold (as opposed to leveling up eloquence).

Having the required amount, we go to Whiterun. Why him? Because in Whiterun there are three blacksmiths from whom we can buy the materials we need, these are:

  • Adrianna Avenicci
  • Ulfbert the Furious Bear
  • Jorlund Graymane

We will upgrade using iron daggers; crafting requires only 1 iron ingot and 1 strip of leather.

Iron ingots can be either purchased from blacksmiths or smelted from iron ore (which, although in smaller quantities, is also sold from them), after which the ore must be smelted in a furnace into ingots (Whiterun has all the necessary equipment look for it).

Leather strips are made from leather, and leather from animal skins. Although leather and leather strips can also be purchased from merchants.

Plan: we run around all the blacksmiths, buy the necessary materials, make daggers from them -> sell the daggers -> scroll for 48 hours. After two days, the entire assortment of merchants is updated. We run around again, buy, craft, etc. up to level 100.

It swings quickly, you can easily finish it in an hour.

Additional prefix when improving

When improving any item, “(Good)” or “(Excellent)” is added to it. What does it depend on? On how much this item is improved.

The following tables tell you which upgrade bonuses provide which attachments and the level of blacksmithing (with and without a perk) at which you can get them. Equipping items that improve blacksmithing will lower the blacksmithing level requirement.

* For some reason, for the sake of reservation, the game will write “(Epic.)” with the same numbers. Apparently there is a translation bug.
