Dienesh logic blocks is an educational and gaming aid created by Zoltan Dienes, a Hungarian psychologist and mathematician. I use them very often when working with children.

Games with Dienesha blocks introduce children to with elementary mathematical concepts -shape, color, size and thickness of objects. Games with blocks develop logical and analytical thinking (the ability to analyze, compare, classify, generalize), creativity, as well as perception, memory, attention and imagination.

The blocks can be used in games with children from 1 year to school.

Since I often use them when working with kids, the necessary simple tasks from the albums that are on sale were not enough for me, so I made my own.

It's very easy to work with them. We place a page from the album in front of the child, to the right or above it the necessary blocks. We invite the child to place blocks on figures of the same color and shape. If I give a child a picture of a steam locomotive, then I suggest putting small animals on the blocks that want to go on a journey, for example, putting a dog in a blue carriage and a squirrel in a red one. Also often, after the child has completed the tasks, I ask him to help me put the blocks back in place, and to do this I ask him to first give me a large red circle or a small blue square. Then I complicate the tasks, asking you to give me something other than a blue circle, or a thick triangle, etc.

This game allows children to consolidate their knowledge of basic colors, geometric shapes, develop spatial thinking, and the ability to complete tasks.

In many countries around the world, the didactic material “Logic Blocks”, developed by the Hungarian psychologist and mathematician Dienes, is successfully used to develop logical thinking in children.

The experience of Russian teachers has shown the effectiveness of using logic blocks as game material in working with children of preschool and primary school age for:

Logical figures

Description of material: The “Let's Play Together” set contains 9 sets of logical figures for working with a subgroup of children. Each set contains 24 shapes (6 squares, 6 rectangles, 6 triangles, 6 circles), differing in color (red, blue, yellow) and size (large, small). Logical figures are a flat version of Dienes blocks.

Sets of “Logical Figures” can be widely used by educators in the pedagogical process for:

  • familiarizing children with standard forms
  • teaching actions with standards
  • development of perception, memory, attention, imagination
  • developing the ability to perform logical operations, etc.

Working with the kit can begin at an early age, starting with familiarization with one, two, and then three properties.

The material “Logical Figures” can be used both in classes and in children’s independent activities.

Here is a description of the game “How Much?” (idea by Metlina L.S.)

Material: logical figures.

Purpose of the game: develop the ability to ask questions and develop the ability to identify properties.

Game description: Children are divided into two teams. The teacher arranges logical figures in any order and invites the children to come up with questions starting with the words “How many...”. For every correct question - a chip. The team with the most chips wins. Question options: “How many large figures?” “How many red figures are there in the first row?” (horizontally), “How many circles?” etc.

Cards with property symbols.

Many games with Dienes blocks and logical figures use cards with property symbols. Introducing a child to symbols of properties is an important step in mastering the entire sign culture, literacy of mathematical symbols, programming, etc. The properties of blocks are conventionally indicated on the cards (color, shape, size, thickness). There are 11 cards in total. And 11 cards with the negation of properties, for example: not red. Cards with property symbols can be used not only as an addition to Dienesh blocks and logical figures, but also as an independent material for games, like the world-famous “memory”.

Game "find a pair"

Material: 2 sets of cards with symbols (without negation) 22 pcs.

Goal: Familiarization with symbols of properties, development of visual memory.

Description of the game: The cards are shuffled and laid out face down, 6 cards in a row, with 4 cards in the last row.

Rules: The first player turns over any two cards, if the cards are the same, takes them for himself and makes another move. If they are different, he shows them to everyone and puts them in their places, face down, trying to remember what is shown on the cards. All children carefully follow the progress of the game, since it is important for everyone to remember where this or that card is. Then the second player takes two cards one at a time... and continues like the first. The player who collects more paired cards than the rest wins.

Logic cubes

Material: 5 cubes on the sides of which symbols of block properties are depicted (size, shape, color, thickness) and symbols of property negation, as well as a digital cube (numbers 3-8 on the sides)

Pedagogical possibilities of the material: Logic cubes, like symbol cards, will help you come up with a variety of games with children, and these games, in turn, will be useful for mastering the actions of substitution and visual modeling, encoding and decoding. Logic cubes are used in conjunction with Dienesh blocks and logical figures. The peculiarity of logic cubes is the possibility of “random” selection of properties (by tossing a cube), and children always like this.

Options for games with logic cubes and Dienesh blocks

Dienesh blocks are an excellent material for replacing any items. So a small red triangular block can easily turn into a small red triangular fish, and a large blue round block can become a wonderful gift cake dish for Carlson. Using Dienesh blocks and logic cubes, you and your children can come up with many scenarios for various games. Let, for example, we decide to play “Gardeners” and plant beautiful flowers in the flower beds. Each “gardener” chooses a large colored circle for his flowerbed and takes turns tossing logic dice. In his flowerbed he will grow: 3 large, red, non-triangular flowers. Perhaps the flowerbed will look like this: a large red circle, a large red square, a large red rectangle. And then our flowers can get to know each other, tell about themselves, what they are like (in color, shape, thickness), how they got into the flowerbed, their flower stories... It is not necessary to throw all the cubes, that is, select blocks based on 4 characteristics and in a certain quantity. We agree with the children in advance how many dice to throw and which ones. The game uses logical figures (3 properties) and logical blocks (4 properties).

A treat for the bear cubs.

Material: 9 images of bear cubs, cards with signs and symbols of properties, logical figures or Dienesh blocks.

Purpose of the game:

  • development of the ability to compare objects according to one to four properties
  • understanding of words: “different”, “same”
  • leading to an understanding of the negation of properties.

Game description:

Option 1: bear cubs came to visit the children. What will we treat our guests to? Our cubs have a sweet tooth and really love cookies, of different colors and shapes. What material is convenient for us to “transform” into cookies. Of course, blocks or logical figures. Let's give the cubs a treat. The girls are serving food. The cookies in the left and right paws should differ only in shape. If the bear cub has a round “cookie” in his left paw, his right paw can have either a square, rectangular, or triangular (not round). And now the boys are treating us. The cookies in the cubs' paws differ only in color. In the future, the condition of the game is to distinguish the cookies by two characteristics - color and shape, color and size, shape and size, etc. When working with older children, it is possible to distinguish the “cookies” by 3-4 properties. In this case, Dienes blocks are used. In all variants, the child chooses any block of “cookies” in one paw, and selects it with the other according to the rule proposed by the teacher.

Option 2 using cards with property symbols. Sequence of actions (algorithm) of the game.

  • Cards with property symbols are placed face down in a stack
  • The child takes any card from the pile
  • Finds "cookies" with the same property
  • Looks for another cookie that differs only in this property
  • Treats the bear
  • “Records” how he treated the bear. The child chose. For example: the “big” card was selected; the child chose a logical figure: a large, red triangle; second cookie: small red triangle. Cookies vary in size. Complication: the difference is not only in one, but in two, three and four properties.
  • In games with finding the difference between 4 properties, Dienesh blocks are used
  • In games you can use logic cubes, except digital ones
  • The games may have elements of competition to see whose team can feed the bears the fastest.

Artists.

Material: “Sketches of paintings” - sheets of large colored cardboard; additional cardboard parts to compose the composition of the picture; set of blocks.

Purpose of the game:

  • development of the ability to analyze the shape of objects
  • development of the ability to compare by their properties
  • development of artistic abilities (choice of color, background, location, composition).

Game description: Children are invited to “paint pictures” based on the sketches. Several people can “paint” one picture at once. Children choose a “sketch” of the painting, paper for the background, details for the future painting, and the necessary blocks. If the part is only outlined in the sketch (the outline of the part), a thin block is selected, if the part is painted, a thick block is selected. So, for example, for a sketch of a painting with elephants, a child will take additional details: 2 elephant heads, the sun, a lake, the top of a palm tree, a cactus, an animal and blocks. At the end of the work, the artists come up with a title for their paintings, arrange an exhibition of paintings, and the guide tells visitors to the exhibition what is depicted in the painting.

Material: Product (cards depicting objects), Logical figures.

Purpose of the game:

  • development of the ability to reason and justify one’s choice

Game description: Children come to a store where there is a large selection of toys. Each child has 3 logical figures “money”. One “money” can only buy one toy. Purchase rules: you can only buy a toy that has at least one property of a logical figure. The rule can be complicated by choosing a toy based on two properties (for example, a large square, a blue square, etc.)

Let's decorate the Christmas tree with beads.

Material: Image of a Christmas tree, 15 cards with symbols, set of logical figures

  • development of the ability to identify and abstract properties
  • ability to “read a diagram”
  • strengthening ordinal counting skills

Game description: You need to decorate the Christmas tree with beads. There should be 5 rows of beads on the tree. There are three beads in each row. The number on the card indicates the serial number of the string of beads (we start counting from the top of the tree). Let's hang the first row of beads (cards with the number 1). The filled circle shows us the place of the bead on the string. The first bead is a small yellow circle, the second is a large yellow square, the third is a small yellow triangle. We hang the rest of the beads in the same way.

Architects (children's playground)

Material: Algorithms No. 1, 2, Dienesh Blocks

Description of the game: Children are invited to develop a project for a playground; select the required building material; build playground facilities. Selection of building material in strict accordance with the rules (according to algorithm No. 1 or algorithm No. 2). How to choose a building material? Let's do this together using algorithm No. 1.

We take any block. Let it be, for example, a blue big thick triangular block. The word “beginning” tells us where to start the path (movement according to the block diagram). In the diamond, the question is: “Is our block red?” - No. We move to the right. In the second diamond, the question is: “Is our block round?” - No, and we find ourselves at the end of the flowchart. Our block can be used in construction. Take a red large thin round block. To the question “red?” We answer “yes” and move left. According to the rule, we change the red color to blue and with the blue block we return to the beginning. To the question “red?” We answer “no” and move to the right. To the question “is it round?” We answer “yes” and then change the round shape to a square one. So by the end our block will be a blue square big thin one.

Thus, all our building material will be, that is, non-red and non-round (size and thickness do not play a role). Construction can begin. The most daring projects are welcome. The most daring can proceed to a more complex selection of material, using algorithm No. 2. (The idea of ​​the games belongs to O. Finkelstein).

Logic train.

Material:

  • Three locomotives of different colors (blue, yellow, red).
  • On each train its number is: 1 2 3 4, 5 6 7 8, 9 10 11 12.
  • 4 carriages
  • Cards with symbols of changing properties, cards depicting relationships between numbers
  • Sets of Dienesh blocks or logical figures.

Purpose of the game:

  • development of the ability for logical actions and operations
  • the ability to decode (decipher) the information shown on the card
  • the ability to modify the properties of objects in accordance with the diagram shown on the card
  • ability to act consistently, in strict accordance with the rules

The entire subgroup of children of 9-12 people can participate in the game. The teacher, and then the children themselves, lay out the game material: trains, carriages, a card with a symbol for changing properties is placed above each carriage (the card is chosen arbitrarily), cards with numerical ratios are also laid out. Our freight train is unusual and logical. The cargo it carries is reloaded from wagon to wagon. In each carriage, changes occur to them in accordance with the rules shown on the card above the carriage.

Sequencing.

  • Distribution of teams among trains. Each child takes a card with numerical relationships, for example, finds a number marked * - this is 3, which means his load will “travel” on the yellow train (“3” is included in the number of this train 1 2 3 4). Thus, all children are divided into three teams (carrying goods in yellow, blue and red trains)
  • Cargo transportation Your cargo must be transported through all cars in accordance with the rules (changing properties clockwise). For example, in a yellow carriage there is a logical figure: a large red triangle, in the first carriage (from the head of the train it will change in size and become a small red triangle, in the second carriage after changing color it will become a small yellow triangle, in the third carriage its shape will change it will become a small yellow rectangle, in the last fourth car there is a repeated color change - our cargo is a small blue rectangle.
  • Place the cargo with which we begin the journey to the left of the train, the cargo that has been in all the cars to the right of the last car. Thus, to the left of the train we will place a large red triangle, to the right of the last car, a small blue rectangle. All children of the team participate together with the teacher in checking the correctness of the task.
  • Take the next load and perform the same actions with it. The team that prepares the largest amount of cargo for transportation wins.
  • One of the options for further development of the game: choosing the point of departure and destination of the cargo (construction of objects, etc.) Preparation of accompanying documents for the cargo (quantity, type, encryption of properties). During the period of mastering the game, the initial number of cars is 1 - 2, then the number of cars increases to four. Changing the location of cards with properties above the cars will allow you to play this game many times (if the children want and are interested).

Each child solves an example on his card, “deciphers” it and takes a block corresponding to the code and finds a place for it on the image of objects. If all blocks are selected correctly, all 15 item images will be filled. For example, a child chose a card: (red, circle, not big, not thick, 6-4), therefore he must take a block red, round, small, thin and put it on the figure of a man, on the part marked with the number 2.

Our version of Dienesha blocks from the manufacturer Corvette. It is made of cheap, but safety-certified plastic. This is a very budget option. The key point when choosing the option from Corvette was the availability of albums for games with tasks. Corvette produces 8 different albums based on Dienesh blocks. Also, for Dienesh blocks, it is from Corvette that you can find additional developments with tasks in development communities.

You can find other very attractive options for Dienesh blocks made of wood, but they usually don’t come with activity books. Albums produced by Corvette are unlikely to be the right size for blocks from another manufacturer. It can also be noted that the prices for wooden blocks of Dienesh are “biting”. That's why I settled on Corvette blocks.

I have been looking closely at the author’s teaching materials for a long time. Before Yana turned 2 years old. 7 months We didn’t have a shortage of developmental materials, so I had previously put off purchasing them. After the last leap in development, most of our educational toys have become irrelevant. Therefore, when choosing gifts for the new year 2016 for Yana, I wanted to find options for toys with a wide age range and developmental potential. By the way, you can find the chronology of her development from birth, as well as our timing of introducing developmental tasks, the initial reaction to them and the effect.

I decided to turn my attention to educational toys using proprietary methods. Of course, I took care of the safety net by purchasing a few plush toys and a story play set from Ikea. No one can guarantee that a new toy will be received with a bang. Actually, this did not happen for us.

The first acquaintance with Dienesh blocks was a complete disappointment. I don’t even know for whom the disappointment was greater - for Yana, who was simply not interested in laying out figures according to templates in albums, or for me, who had been anticipating her interest in new “developments” for so long. Over and over again I listed the merits of the albums to Yana, played with them myself and with other characters, trying to attract her attention. But it was all in vain.

Yana is very cool about templates. Apparently, these are the fruits of excessive attention 😈. By the way, Yana has the same attitude towards beautiful mosaics with large details and template diagrams that are understandable for two-year-olds. Although most kids are happy to assemble them using templates. Yana always has to be persuaded, and if she collects it, it’s only as a favor.

After our unsuccessful acquaintance, I had to read on the Internet details about the use of blocks. After that, I decided to try free games without albums. Then a miracle happened, Yana’s games were so captivating that they became difficult to complete. When Yana got the hang of it, everything came into play, including albums with templates. Although, according to reviews on the Internet, many kids are primarily interested in learning from albums.

Samples

For children 2-3 years old, at the acquaintance stage, you can simplify the game by providing not the entire set, but part of it.

  1. Getting to know the characteristics of objects. Sampling based on one characteristic (color, shape, size, thickness). Please select blocks based on one criterion:
  • red/blue/yellow;
  • square/round/rectangular/triangular;
  • thick/flat;
  • big/small.

Developing the skill of systematization

This is the inverse of sampling. The mother makes a sample and invites the baby to determine the characteristic by which the sample was made. To get acquainted with such games, you can try a variety of sampling options. The main thing is that the hidden sign catches the child’s eye. Also, at the initial stages, we give tasks to determine one sign, then we complicate it.

I offer Yana the simplest option, show several groups (rows) of figures and ask her to tell me how they differ.

Another task on thickness, but this one is more difficult. The colors distract from the thickness. This level of complexity has so far caused difficulties for Yana.

Another task to develop thinking, continuation of the series. It is a classic task from intelligence tests 😀. Yana cannot yet master even the simplest range of colors. But we only did this a couple of times.

Construction

This creative direction cannot be ignored for any toy with geometric shapes.

In Yana’s development diary, I already wrote that over the past couple of months she has had a big breakthrough in the field of design. Dienesh's blocks also came in handy.

Of course we have Lego. It has its advantages, but try making a house out of regular Lego Duplo blocks. Even for an adult it will take a lot of time. And kids can’t do it at all. A house made of Dienesh blocks from a square and a triangle can be completed in a couple of seconds by both an adult and a child.

For design classes, I adopted . In the first couple of lessons, I got a lot of simple real-life objects.

Yana was inspired by the idea and at this stage is repeating the designs that she remembered, and also improvising. I must admit right away that so far her improvisations are far from objects from real life. But the main thing is that the process has begun.

When reading such material for the first time, it seems that such games are complex in terms of implementation. I want to convince you otherwise. Just remember a couple of options or write them down on a piece of paper for the first time. Try playing. If your baby likes it, then I’m sure your brain will immediately generate a dozen more game options.

Yana appreciated the free games with Dienesh's blocks. I have a hard time finishing them, as she usually requires continuation. Towards the end we have classes on albums.

Albums based on Dienesh blocks are designed for different ages. When choosing a specific album, I would advise focusing not on age markings, but on the child’s level of knowledge.

I really liked it album “Making Nonsense”(Babadu). It is marked “from 4 years old,” but if you are enthusiastically involved in your child’s development, then even at less than three years old it may be suitable. This album is distinguished by its colorful design. By the way, if you have a “developed” 4-year-old child, keep in mind that he may no longer be interested in the album. The second album in our arsenal "Little Logics"(Babadu). It is intended for children aged two years and older. The design of the album's illustrations is quite modest. The album contains tasks for learning colors, shapes and sizes.







I foresee questions at what age is it better to purchase a set of blocks. Already at one and a half years old they can be used to study colors, and at the end of the second year to study shapes. We only got them towards the end of the third year, and I think it’s timely. In my opinion, there is no need to rush. The optimal age for introducing blocks will depend on the perseverance and temperament of the baby. For calm Yana, this is the end of the third year; for active kids, perhaps it will be 4 years.

    Place the set in front of your child and give him the opportunity to explore the figures, touch, sort through, hold and play with them. A little later, you can offer the following tasks:

    Find all the figures of the same color as the one laid out (show, for example, a yellow figure). You can then ask your child to point out all the triangular shaped blocks (or all the big shapes, etc.).

    Ask your child to give all the blue figures to the bear, yellow ones to the bunny, and red ones to the mouse; then in a similar way we group the shapes by size, shape, thickness.

Ask your child to identify any shape by color, shape, size, thickness.

    Logical games and exercises with Dienesh blocks

    Several figures are laid out in front of the child that need to be remembered, and then one of the figures disappears or is replaced by a new one, or two figures are swapped. The child should notice the changes.

    All the figures are again put into a bag. The child takes a figurine out of the bag and characterizes it according to one or more characteristics. Or names the shape, size or thickness without removing it from the bag.

    Lay out three figures. The child needs to guess which one is extra and according to what principle (by color, shape, size or thickness).

    Place any figure in front of the child and ask him to find figures that are the same in color, but not the same in shape, or the same in shape, but not the same in color.

    We lay out the figures one after another so that each subsequent one differs from the previous one in just one attribute: color, shape, size, thickness.

    We lay out a chain of Dienesh blocks so that there are no figures nearby that are the same in shape and color (in color and size; in size and shape, in thickness and color, etc..).

    We lay out the chain so that next to it there are figures of the same color and size, but different shapes (the same size, but different colors).

    We lay out 8 logical blocks of Dienesh in front of the child, and while he does not see, under one of them we hide a “treasure” (coin, pebble, cut out picture, etc.). The child should ask you leading questions, and you can only answer “yes” or “no”: “Is the treasure under the blue block?” - “No”, “Under the red?” - "No". The child concludes that the treasure is under the yellow block and asks further about the size, shape and thickness. Then the child hides the “treasure”, and the adult asks leading questions.

    By analogy with the previous game, you can hide one of the figures in a box, and the child will ask leading questions to find out what kind of block is in the box.

    We lay out 5-6 any figures in a row. You need to build the bottom row of figures so that under each figure in the top row there is a figure of a different shape (color, size).

    We offer a table of nine cells with figures displayed in it. The child needs to pick up the missing blocks.

    In the game of dominoes, the pieces are divided equally between the participants. Each player takes turns making their move. If there is no piece, the move is skipped. The first one to lay out all the pieces wins. You can walk in different ways: with figures of a different color (shape, size).

    The child is asked to lay out the Dienesh blocks according to the drawn diagram-picture, for example, a large red circle is drawn, followed by a small blue triangle, etc.

    From Dienesh's logical blocks you can create planar images of objects: a car, a locomotive, a house, a tower.

    Mom puts only rectangular blocks into the box, and the child removes all red ones, then mom puts away only thin figures, and the child removes large ones, etc.

    The child needs to select Dienesh blocks using cards that show their properties.

The child is shown a card with one or more properties depicted on it. Then the tasks with cards gradually become more difficult.
