How to get to the coin auction. Coin auction

Bookmarked: 7

I regularly come across the question “Where can I sell coins?” and I’m too lazy to describe the possible options again and again. Therefore, it is logical to summarize this data in the form of a blog post and provide a link to it. So, let's consider a hypothetical situation - you found a bunch of coins and it is not of much interest to you, and therefore the task is to sell them for adequate money.

Stage No. 1 (initial assessment). First of all, you need to understand whether your coins are rare. This task in itself is not an easy one, because... To correctly evaluate coins, serious knowledge is required, and if you are new to this business, get ready for difficulties. If we are talking about coins of the USSR and the Bank of Russia, then the initial assessment of coins is carried out according to, which allows us to determine by denomination and year of issue whether the coin is rare or not. However, the specificity of Soviet and Russian numismatics is the presence of rare coins even in simple year and denomination coins, which can cost more than even the rarest annual coins. But to identify them, special catalogs are required, in which the very differences that allow the coin to be considered a different variety are noted. In this note, I can recommend using . If, as happens in such situations, you don’t want to tinker with catalogs and figure things out, then you can ask for help on one of the Internet forums, for example, here or here. It is there that there are many collectors of coins by year and by variety. But you shouldn’t expect that they will immediately give you all the information for free. Often, when experienced collectors see a rare coin in a pile, they will try to get it for cheap, so it is better to evaluate coins in several places and provide large images of the coins so that everyone can see what is there and in what condition. This will provide the most accurate initial estimate for the coins. On some numismatic forums, it is possible to list a lot with the wording “offer” and without the obligation to sell the lot. This also allows you to estimate the value of the coin.

Stage No. 2 (drawing up a lot). When we have made a preliminary assessment, it remains to decide how to sell the coins - individually or in bulk. If the coins are really simple and not expensive, then there are two options - sell in one lot, logically expecting less income with less labor costs, or sell one coin at a time. In the case of rare and infrequent coins, I recommend selling them separately, because... a composite lot will bring less income. And given that the amounts in this case are higher, it is worth fighting for.

Stage No. 3 (selection of a site for sale). Currently, there are many places where coins are sold:

1. Notice boards like “From hand to hand” or “Avito”. Not the best option, because... sites do not have a narrow numismatic specialization and they are not popular among collectors.

2. Numismatic auctions"Hammer" type. Such auctions allow anyone, after registration, to put an item up for sale. Thus, the “Hammer” auction contains a very serious section dedicated to coins, where more than 100 thousand coins are put up for sale at the same time. There will be plenty of people willing to buy coins here. True, it is assumed that you will pay a commission to the auction if the goods are sold there (a little more than 3% of the cost of the lot).

3. Forum auctions and exchanges. The vast majority of numismatic forums also contain a section(s) dedicated to the sale of collectibles. When choosing a forum for selling, you should carefully study the rules of the sales section, as well as user activity on the Exchange. If there are few lots on sale and activity is insignificant, then there is no point in displaying lots there.

4. Selling “via personal”. If you have posted an interesting coin on the forum, then do not doubt that those interested in purchasing will contact you through private messages in the hope of snatching the coin at a price cheaper than the market or close to it, but without open bidding. Sometimes it is worth using this option, but to do this you need to be sure that you understand the real price of the item being sold. Personal offers are good for establishing price understanding and can be used to establish a starting price for an auction.

5. Numismatic groups on social networks. In recent years, numismatic groups on social networks have been gaining popularity. In many of them you can put your coins up for sale for a commission. This sales option is suitable for simple coins, because Usually the groups are represented mainly by novice collectors.

6. Weekly online auctions. In recent years, many weekly online auctions have proliferated, which accept coins for a commission (from 10%). The downside is the commission, as well as the need to wait for the coins to be sold and the buyer to pay for them.

7. Large in-person auctions. There are several such numismatic auctions in our country. But in order to display coins there, they must be rare and in demand. As with online auctions, you will have to pay a commission. Considering that the buyer also pays a commission, it turns out that the difference between the amount the seller receives and the buyer pays can be 20-25%, which, you see, is not small. Perhaps (if the coin is not mega rare), it is worth selling the lot directly through forums, where there is no commission for sold lots. However, for very expensive lots this is an ideal result, because... very rich people do not have time to sit on forums waiting for rare coins, but they can go to large auctions several times a year, or they place orders to their trusted representatives who will be present at the auction.

A very difficult moment in numismatics is selling a find or a specimen from a collection at a market price. In this review, we will look at the main places where metal money of the USSR and modern Russia is bought, and we will also offer a number of tips, following which will help to sell them at the best rate.

Places of sale on the Internet and in your city

There are many ways and places where a coin can be sold. Let's divide the main ones into two large groups:

Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. Let's look at their pros and cons:

Place (way) pros Minuses
Specialty purchases, antique shops and pawn shops opportunity to receive money immediately you lose up to half the real value
Banks availability Usually the list of banknotes purchased by the bank is limited to copies made of precious metals
Numismatic clubs can be sold at a high rate and receive money immediately

lack of a sufficient number of buyers in small towns,

the need to be able to independently evaluate and bargain.

In-person and absentee auctions (auction houses) high final bid

long waiting period (up to six months),

auctions take up to a quarter of the sale price (high sales commission)

Notice boards (for example, Avito) opportunity to sell at a price you set

few collectors (real buyers),

a lot of scammers

Numismatic communities and auctions on the Internet maximum bet not suitable for one-time sales, since to obtain high profits you need to earn a reputation and wait time from the moment of registration

Thus, a problem arises: either the coins can be sold quickly and cheaply, or you will have to put in some effort and wait, but then the profit will be much higher. For those who want to make the most of their sales, we recommend turning your attention to numismatic online communities. Nowadays you can find dozens of sites and groups on social networks on the Internet, on the basis of which auctions are organized that are accessible to everyone.

The most famous online numismatist communities

The largest of these sites are the following:

Central Forum of Numismatists Samara Numismatists Forum Treasure hunters forum reviewdetector.ru
Starting price of lots from 1000 rubles The minimum cost of a lot in the main sections is from 200 rubles There is no minimum lot price set
Lots can only be exhibited by users registered on the forum for at least a year You can start trading only after 20 posts on the forum No restrictions for new users
No commission and no subscription fee Commission 2%, no subscription fee Commission 4% only for items costing more than 50,000 rubles; with frequent sales, a subscription fee may be established

As you can see from the table, each community has its own rules and restrictions. The restrictions are aimed at excluding dishonest sellers and buyers, and a small commission allows you to pay for the work of administrators who monitor compliance with the rules by all users. Therefore, these sites are generally a safe place for conducting transactions, although at the initial stage it will be a little difficult for a beginner to understand all the intricacies of the trading taking place on them.

10 tips to help you sell your coin at the highest price

An auction format on one of the platforms described above would be the best choice; it will ensure quick implementation at a high price. You do not need to know the current bid, it will be set by the buyers bidding on the item.

Do not clean banknotes yourself, as this may lead to a decrease in their value. The maximum that should be done is to wash them with soap and running water, but do not use any additional products.

Take high-quality, high-resolution photos. The buyer should be able to enlarge and examine any area of the coin being sold.

Example of correct photos:

These photos are not suitable:

Please read the auction rules carefully. Select the required section and place your offer. Earn a reputation to increase your level of trust.

The lower the initial price of a lot, the more people will compete for it. Accordingly, the final rate may be significantly higher.

Using additional auction services (for example, highlighting a topic, pinning it, etc.) will not allow your product to get lost among similar ones.

Don't forget to install Antisniper. This condition allows you to extend the auction until the last bid.

The largest number of purchases are made in the evening (from 18 to 21 hours). Also take into account the decline in buyer activity on summer weekends and holidays. Keep this in mind when setting your trading end time. Most sites offer the opportunity to raise a topic for free; do this during the peak of visitor activity.

Set the blitz price a little higher than the market price. 5-10% interest above the average cost is enough. It can work if the buyer does not want to miss out on the item.

Conduct auctions in series. Firstly, you will be able to increase your audience reach, since in the lots you can indicate information about other auctions you are conducting. And secondly, it is beneficial for buyers to purchase several lots from one seller at once, which will save on delivery.

An example of a lot design option:

Topic title: 5 kopecks 2003 without mint mark, until December 25, 22:00 Moscow time

  • start: 200
  • step: 100
  • blitz: 2100
  • description: 5 kopecks 2003 without mint mark
  • year: 2003
  • ending: 12/25/2017, 22:00 Moscow time
  • antisniper: A bid placed less than 10 minutes before the end of the auction moves the end of the auction 10 minutes forward from the time of this bid. Multiple extensions.
  • lot location: Saint Petersburg
  • delivery and postage costs: payment at the buyer's expense, by Russian Post - 80 rubles, or pickup at metro station Nevsky Prospekt (for several lots, you can indicate that delivery is combined and insert a link to all lots)
  • payment: to a Sberbank card
  • note: additional photos on request

How much can you sell a coin for? Setting the cost

To understand whether it makes sense to put up banknotes for sale, as well as where and how it is more profitable to sell them, you need to determine their current value.

Basics:

Commission from buyers is 7% of the hammer price, but not less than 100 rubles.

The payment period for won lots is 5 days.

1. General Provisions.

1.2 The purpose of the auction is to provide intermediary services for buyers and sellers in carrying out purchase and sale transactions.

2. Determination of auction participants.

2.1. Buyer.

The buyer at the auction can be any legal entity or individual with legal capacity.

The buyer becomes a person who has registered on the website by filling out a special electronic form and is authorized by the auction administrator. Participation in the auction means for the participant full and unconditional agreement with these Rules.

Registration data is confidential and can only be accessed by the auction administration and the participant himself. The password specified during registration can be changed at any time only by the auction participant. The login can be changed at a time when the user is not participating in the auction, other credentials can be changed by the user through a request sent to the site administrator.

The buyer can place bids in the current auction immediately after registration, if there is more than 1 day left before it closes. If there is no confirmation of authorization of the buyer's account by the auction administrator, bids will be void.

The limit for participation in trading for newly registered users is limited to 200,000 rubles. If a participant wishes to increase the limit, he must contact the auction administration.

Confirmation of buyer authorization is sent by the auction administrator to the e-mail address of the buyer specified during registration within 24 hours from the date of registration. The authorization process consists of confirmation by the administrator of the physical existence of the buyer and the compliance of the data stated during registration, via telephone.

The site administration may refuse to confirm registration without explanation. In case of refusal of registration, bets placed will be cancelled.

Anonymous registration is possible for the buyer, in which it is enough to indicate a login, password and email address. In this case, the buyer who has gone through the anonymous registration process must make a deposit of 15% of the bid amount in order to take part in the auction.

Also, the auction administration, at its discretion and without giving reasons, may not allow any registered buyer to participate in the auction.

2.2. Salesman.

Participants in the auction as a seller can be any legal or physical persons with legal capacity. When accepting items for auction, an agreement is concluded with the seller, which specifies the starting price of the item in rubles and the auction commission.

In the absence of large bids, the item can be sold at the starting price. The auction does not accept reserves above the price specified in the contract. The auction administration reserves the right to withdraw any lot from sale without giving reasons.

The seller has no right to withdraw an item from auction while the item is being sold at auction.

The auction makes settlements with the seller for the sold item after the lots are purchased by buyers, but no later than 30 days after the end of the auction. Payment for goods sold at auction is made by bank transfer to the seller's bank account. Items not sold at auction may be sold at the starting price after the end of the auction. Lots not paid for by the buyer are not redeemed at the auction and are returned to the seller without charging a commission.

3. Procedure for holding an auction.

3.1. The dates for the next auction are indicated in a special section of the website “AUCTION SCHEDULE” according to Moscow time.

3.2. Bidding at the HERMES auction takes place on-line (Live bidding), according to the principle of in-person auctions.

3.3. The participant who makes the maximum bid wins the auction.

3.4. Viewing of the lots put up for auction is possible from the moment the current auction begins, both electronically on the auction website, and in person by the buyer at the address Moscow, st. Arbat, 38/1, building 2. The buyer has the opportunity to place bids from the start of the auction indicated on the website.

3.5. The time specified as the end of the auction is considered to be the time when the first lot of the current auction begins to close. Bidding on a lot is considered completed if within 11 seconds no buyer has placed a bid on this lot. If a bid is made, the auction deadline for this lot is extended by 11 seconds after the last bid was made. If within 11 seconds after the last bid, auction participants did not make new bids, bidding on the lot is closed and the lot is considered sold to the participant who made the last, maximum bid. After the end of the auction for the first lot, the closing of the auction for the next lot begins, and so on until the end of the entire auction. The auction administration is not responsible for possible problems with communication and Internet signal delays, and therefore does not recommend that buyers place bids at the last second before the closing of auctions for the lot.

3.6. The participant can set any price equal to or higher than the starting price. The participant can make the next bet no lower than the corresponding step according to the table below.

Minimum steps to increase the price of a lot:

from 1 to 5,000 rubles: 100 rubles,

from 5,000 to 25,000 rubles: 250 rubles,

from 25,000 to 50,000 rubles: 500 rubles,

from 50,000 to 100,000 rubles: 1,000 rubles,

from 100,000 to 250,000 rubles: 2,500 rubles,

from 250,000 to 500,000 rubles: 5,000 rubles,

from 500,000 rubles: 10,000 rubles.

The buyer is responsible for any errors in placing a bid on a lot. The buyer cannot claim that he acted on behalf of a third party. All prices are indicated in Russian rubles.

3.7. AUTOSTAT. The participant can use the auto-bet function by setting its size in the appropriate window, and its value must not be lower than the current bet plus one step. If this condition is not met, the auto bid will not be accepted. If you make an auto bet, then the current bet will be outbid by your bet with a minimum step; if other bets appear, your bet will each time outbid the current one by a minimum step. If, as a result of bidding, the auto bid exceeds the current one by less than an auction step, then it outbids the current bid. If two or more participants have placed the same auto bids, the buyer who placed the first bid is in the lead.

EXAMPLE 1: If the bid is 20,000, and the auction step is 250 rubles, then you can make a minimum auto bid of 20,250 rubles.

EXAMPLE 2: If your auto bid is 60,000, and the auction step is 1000 rubles, as a result of the bidding, the current price of the lot not your bid is 59,900, then your auto bid will still outbid the current bid and your bid 60,000 will be in the lead. To outbid her, another buyer would have to bid 61,000.

3.8. If the Buyer accidentally placed a bid or auto-bid more than planned (for example, he planned to place a bid of 10,000, but accidentally scored 100,000), he must immediately contact the auction administration through the feedback form in his personal account with a request to cancel the bid or auto-bid for lot number XXX. This does not apply to bids placed during the auction's closing time. The buyer is fully responsible for bids placed during online bidding and cannot be cancelled.

4.1. All descriptions of coins are made in Russian, annotations and links are given in accordance with the principles accepted in numismatic auction activities.

4.2. Processing of coin images using special computer programs is not allowed. 4.3. The exhibited lots can be viewed in person at the Antiques-Numismatics store, located at: Moscow, st. Arbat 36/2 building 6.

Claims related to the quality and condition of items after bidding will only be accepted if the lot does not match the photograph or there is an error in the description of the lot, which may affect its value.

4.5. If there are no valid reasons for refusing to purchase the won lots, the buyer is allowed to participate in auctions only after making a deposit in the amount of 10% of the bid limit. The deposit can be used to pay for lots won at subsequent auctions or returned at the request of the participant in the absence of won lots.

At the expense of the auction, we send lots worth more than 3,000 rubles, which can be sent by Russian Post by regular or registered mail (maximum weight - 100 grams, maximum size of the letter sent: 229 x 324 mm.) Sooner or later, every numismatist faces the question of where and how best to sell or buy a coin. Of course, the easiest way is to go to the market, to a numismatic store or to collectors' gathering places. But this was relevant 20 years ago - today auctions, including those held on the Internet, are in the lead.

Of course, in this case (as in any other) there may be a risk of buying a fake, so we conducted research and prepared a review of the most famous and reputable auctions.

Coin store "IMPERIAL"

It all started in 2001, when the first full-fledged printed catalog of coins with prices appeared, published by the Konros publishing house. At the same time, the auction house was going to begin developing its own Internet platform, but at first it remained not particularly visited for a long time. At that time, the first large Russian Internet trading platform, molotok.ru (now closed), ruled the Internet. Finally, by the end of 2002, after holding a number of weekly online auctions, https://auction.conros.ru/ became a truly in-demand and popular resource among numismatists.

Today, all coins offered by Conros as lots, and after the sale, go to the new owner with a guarantee of authenticity from the trading house. Today, this Internet resource attracts about 2500-3000 unique Internet users every day, which indicates its relevance and popularity.

To participate in the auction, you must register by indicating the exact postal address with zip code and contact phone number; after checking the data, you will be given the opportunity to place bids at the current auction. The commission from the buyer is 10-15% of the lot price based on the auction results, and the seller is charged 15% of the sale price of the lot. In addition to weekly Internet auctions, Conros also conducts monthly and semi-annual (the latter are held in St. Petersburg) auctions.

Auction "Wolmar"

There are 2 types of auctions offered here: VIP - for investment, rare, collectible coins, as well as awards and medals (lot cost - over 1000 rubles). Standard type auctions are organized for inexpensive coins from different countries and periods. In both cases A 10% commission is charged from the seller and buyer. You can also sell antiques here - separate auctions are organized for this.

Auction "Efimok"

Volmar's main rival is also working since 2006.

He conducted more than 180 auctions; to participate in the auction you must be over 18 years old and pre-register on the website www.efimok.ru, be sure to indicate a contact phone number and postal address. The final price of the lot includes the cost commission (10%) and postage.

Auction "Hermes"

It has been operating on the Internet since 2010 and has established itself very well among numismatists.

Auction “Numismatist”

Internet project www.numismat.ru also conducts auctions more than 90 times.

Here they accept materials for auctions 2.5 months before they are held, after which a very high-quality color catalog of lots is prepared. The commission is 15% of the final cost of the lot achieved as a result of trading. You can also sell medals here.

Auction "NumizRus"

The price of the lot includes the maximum offered price, commission (10%) and shipping costs. You can pay for and pick up the won lot at the Moscow office. Delivery is carried out only on the territory of the Russian Federation. Lots are sent to the buyer after 100% prepayment, and the costs of transferring money for purchased lots are borne by the buyer.

Auction “RusNumismat”

Also, auctions, and not only on the Internet, are conducted by LLC " Russian Numismatic House» (www.rusnumismat.ru) – not only coins, table medals and banknotes are put up for sale, but also awards, antiques and old and rare books.

More than 40 auctions have already been held, in order to participate in which you need to register freely and pay a commission fee based on the results of the auction - it amounts to 5-10 percent and is charged to both the buyer and the seller.

Good old Molotok (now closed)

A popular trading platform that also displays collectibles (coins, medals, bonds) is molotok.ru.

This is one of the very first and largest Internet trading platforms, which began its activities back in 2000. However, despite its enormous popularity, the risk of running into a fake is higher here than on highly specialized sites.

Other auctions

Additionally, it is worth saying that many large Internet resources for numismatists, in addition to those indicated, also have their own stores and coin auctions - these are “Russian Coin”, the newspaper “Treasure Hunter and Gold Miner” and others.

Among the “live” (off the Internet) auctions can be noted from the house “Alexander”, the company “Coins and Medals”, the company “Gelos” - they are held both in Russia (the first two) and in Europe (“Gelos”).

The most famous in the USA are auctions of Dmitry Markov(“Markovsky”), held annually in early January, this is where prices for Russian coins are determined for the entire year. By the way, they usually coincide with one of the main events in the world of numismatics – the International Numismatic Show, held in New York.

Today, unlike the 80s or 90s of the last century, buying or selling a coin is not a problem. Abroad, almost every numismatic store has its own auction, and today Russian portals have picked up this trend, which indicates the active development of the coin business in the country. If you want to sell coins yourself, then watch the video instructions on how to do it.
