A selection of tower defense games. Whose tower is stronger: Tower Defense games Best TD games on PC

I talked about 8 tower defense games that I play myself. There is only one rule in such games - by all available means, prevent the enemy from approaching the protected object.

The Tower Defense game genre first appeared 10 years ago on the PC, but it gained real popularity on the iPhone and iPad. It's all about simple game mechanics, and the controls are great for touch screens. There is only one rule in such games - by all available means, prevent the enemy from approaching the protected object.

Because of this simplicity, the App Store is filled with hundreds of similar Tower Defense games, but only a few are worthy of attention. We have collected 8 of the best games in the tower defense genre, among which you will definitely find something suitable for yourself.

Defenders: Tower Defense Origins

Defenders combines classic tower defense and card RPG. All your towers, traps and spells are just playing cards that can be collected, combined and improved.

The game has its own storyline with tasks, bosses and heroic modes. There is also a random battle mode, which is perfect for a small battle somewhere in a traffic jam. Defenders is also distinguished by colorful graphics, frequent updates, promotions, competitions and gorgeous Russian voice acting. A must-have for fantasy lovers.

The Apple Store also has a sequel, Defenders 2: Tower Defense CCG, but I like the first version better.

Epic War TD 2

A game with an emphasis on entertainment and extreme difficulty. Epic War TD 2 has about fifty mind-blowing puzzles, peppered with all sorts of explosions and destruction. If you like games harder, then Epic War is your choice.

Alien Creeps TD

Despite the cartoonish graphics, this game is in no way inferior in terms of entertainment to Epic War TD 2. Alien Creeps TD is simply ideal for mobile devices, since all battles last only a couple of minutes, which means you can play it even while standing in a short queue in supermarket.

Jelly Defense

A gray, but at the same time incredibly colorful game with a large set of locations and haunting music. Just don’t buy the childish graphics - Jelly Defense is very demanding on strategy, since only a certain tower is suitable for each type of enemy.

Fieldrunners 2

Intense gameplay, non-stop action, beautiful graphics, expansive game world - FieldRunners 2 is truly addictive to me. What’s especially interesting is the simple upgrade system and the ability to place towers wherever you want, and not just in certain cells.

The Creeps 2

In this game you have to protect not treasures and jewelry, but the sleep of a small child. The difficulty of the game at the first levels is not impressive, but over time, victory will be harder and harder, and towards the end it will be almost unattainable.

The game is full of themed levels with unique designs and a unique atmosphere. The Creeps is full of surprises, play it and you'll immediately understand what I'm talking about.

Tower Madness 2

What could be crazier than protecting sheep from aliens? Tower Madness has a strange plot, interesting graphics, and is labeled as an "addictive" game by the New York Times.

In conclusion

Of course, it’s difficult to fit the best games into one list, so if you know of even cooler games in the tower defense genre, feel free to leave your options in the comments.

Release date: The first one was 2008. The second one was 2014.

An arcade-tactical-shooter tower defense game in which players, in the role of a battle mage, will have to fight off countless hordes of orcs and goblins of various stripes. The concept of the game is interesting - Orcs Must Die! – this is a non-standard tower defense, in which there is not even a single tower. Instead, we, in the role of a magician, rush around the location, independently repelling the attacks of enemies and periodically setting up various cunning traps.

The game has several types of weapons, various magic, many traps, and all this can be improved by using skulls - a special currency issued for completing a level on a particular difficulty. Of course, it will not be possible to take your entire arsenal into battle, so players will have to think through their battle tactics and take only what is guaranteed to be useful.

Separately, it is worth noting the plot, which is built around each character and is always directly related to the gameplay. It's a pleasure to follow him.

But what then is the difference from other similar projects?

The main difference is that towers and their upgrades here are maps that players need to find and upgrade. For each specific level, you will often have to change the deck, selecting the most optimal cards for passing. You can get cards in missions, in the daily lottery and when purchasing boosters (which, by the way, are purchased with in-game currency). Extra cards can be sold or used to improve towers and spells or increase their level.

The gameplay here is as follows - you have a spaceship made of hexagonal shaped panels that fit together to form starships of various shapes and sizes (depending on the mission). The gameplay of the game is divided into strategic and "tower". In the strategic part, we, as survivors, explore the dungeon, extract treasures and resources, and in the second, we set up turrets and guard the crystal. The gameplay is structured in such a way that with each new room it becomes more difficult to protect the crystal, so the player will constantly have to balance between extracting resources, the desire to explore more rooms and moving to the next floor.

Places for traps and towers on each level are marked in advance, however, due to the characteristics of the characters available for play and the tactics used by the player, the gameplay may be completely different. As the character’s level increases and after certain special conditions are met, new devices, active and passive skills, etc. are unlocked. The controls of the game are simple, but with some features. So, for example, having selected a weapon, we press the attack button, after which the gun will fire until it receives another order. The soldiers, flickering in different directions, are controlled in a similar way, and are used for repair work, as well as receiving various bonuses. In addition, each of the heroes has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Kingdom Rush Frontiers

Release date: 2016

Genre: Indie, tower defense

The continuation of one of the best representatives of the tower defense genre turned out to be no less exciting. In principle, if you are a fan of the previous installments, then you don’t need to read further - pick up the game and go into battle! For the rest, it should be said that this project is an excellent example of a high-quality game in the “Tower Defense” genre. Everything is great here - the polished gameplay, the traditional visual style for the series, and the abundance of humor, as well as all sorts of Easter eggs.

As for the gameplay, it is practically no different from other representatives of the genre. We have missions with a route followed by the enemy, there are points where you can place towers, and there are heroes who, in difficult times, are always able to plug a gap in the defense. Of course, compared to previous parts of the series, there are plenty of innovations here. Thus, the specializations of towers, their properties and improvements have changed dramatically. Now you will have to learn to fight again (which, however, does not in the least interfere with enjoying the game).

Columns can be improved, but ordinary opponents are gradually becoming more diverse (there are more than 20 types) and stronger. In addition, the game contains bosses that are not so easy to kill.

At the same time, there are also special stones that give warriors various bonuses. There is no leveling up here as such, and players select their role in battle using equipment that needs to be crafted using resources. Protolife

Release date: 2018

Genre: tower defense, aliens, retro, pixel graphics, strategy, indie

Pixel Tower Defense with original mechanics, in which you, as colonists, have to fight against a proto-creature similar to crimson biomass, which sleeps during the day and grows at night. For this reason, the gameplay here can be divided into two phases: during the day we try to recapture the territory, and at night we try to protect everything we have.

Defensive structures in the game are built from blocks, which can be arranged in different ways to create different buildings and towers with different characteristics. An unusual enemy - growing living biomass can seep into even the smallest gap in the defense, so its spread should be constantly monitored. Control here is carried out directly through the construction robot (even without the help of a mouse!), which imposes some restrictions on the gameplay - if you get carried away with construction on one side of the base, you will have to run for a long time to the other side, not having time to break through the defense.

Tower Defense is a genre of games that, despite its simplicity, has managed to gain considerable popularity among modern gamers. The essence of the game comes down to destroying waves of advancing opponents, who become stronger and more numerous with each new round. Elimination of enemies occurs with the help of various guns, towers, traps and other similar means, which the player arranges according to the level at his discretion.

The Tower Defense genre has constantly developed (and continues to develop), and today it is quite difficult to find a similar game in its pure form, without mixing elements of other genres: RPG, shooter, and so on. Therefore, in our selection you will see games for which the TD principle served as the basis for gameplay, but at the same time they are not devoid of the characteristic features of many other games.

12. Bloons TD 5

Stop the invasion of balloons into the jungle - the ancestral domain of monkeys, using monkeys, macaque snipers, robots and other tailed fighters. A very bright game with , the gameplay of which is a classic Tower Defense.

Bloons TD 5 offers two single-player game modes with a large number of maps and many random missions, as well as multiplayer support. Pleased with the impressive number of monkey recruits and other units, divided into unique classes, each of which has a rather large list of improvements. This allows you to create your own unique tower defense schemes. The graphics in Bloons TD 5 are made in HD quality, and you can download a simplified flash version of the game from the official website.

11. Sanctum 1-2

Sanctum is an unusual project that combines the Tower Defense and first-person shooter genres. The player will be in the role of an elite fighter to defend a futuristic city from the invasion of alien monsters, using various defensive structures and five types of personal weapons.

The games in the Sanctum series are made in full 3D, are characterized by a solid fantasy setting and quite acceptable graphics, as well as the fact that all the action (including the construction of defensive fortifications) takes place in a first-person view. The game has several modes, including for 4 people.

10. Dungeon Warfare

A rather difficult game in the tower defense genre, at a high level of difficulty it borders on the real one - one wrong choice of where to install a trap or tower, and creeps will instantly break through the defense of the would-be defender.

In total, Dungeon Warfare offers more than four dozen levels with increasing difficulty, more than two dozen opponents and almost three dozen types of traps with an automatic upgrade system. Dungeon Warfare also features a flexible difficulty system and an endless game mode.

9.CastleStorm

Castle versus castle - this is the easiest way to describe CastleStorm, which combines the principles of tower defense with elements of strategy and a castle-building simulator.

In CastleStorm, the player builds and develops his own castle, and the list of available resources, units and other features important for gameplay depends on the selected modules. The enemy is doing the same, and both sides are constantly sending troops against each other, trying to break the enemy's defenses while strengthening their own defenses. In general, the confrontation here is built on the principle of a “castle” duel. The nice aspects of CastleStorm are the realistic, funny (con) and abundance of multiplayer modes.

8. GemCraft – Chasing Shadows

A fairly old and well-known game in the Tower Defense genre, characterized by a complex strategic system with extensive capabilities, the basis for which was the ability to combine unique magic stones with various traps, towers, and so on. 7. Anomaly Series

During the passage, the player will be able to visit various parts of the planet, including both large dilapidated cities and desert Arctic lands, high mountain ranges and many other interesting places. And given the excellent level of graphics, the proposed landscapes truly delight in the epic nature of their design. The strategic element here has also received very serious development: each unit has unique capabilities, and only competent selection of a detachment and its subsequent reasonable leadership will lead to success.

6. Warstone TD

A tower defense game with nice cartoon graphics and a solid fantasy setting. In addition, there was room in the gameplay for a full-fledged RPG element: Warstone TD has several game classes with unique skills. The choice of class seriously affects game tactics, and for each there are several branches of development, including a large number of improvements for basic skills.

In general, a very unusual representative of the TD genre, where instead of the usual “towers”, war stones are used, on which various types of units can be placed. A large selection of modes adds even more variety to the game: in addition to the story campaign, there is “Labyrinth”, cooperative missions and even something similar.

5. Dungeon Defenders

Three-dimensional TD with a big focus on cooperative playthrough. Players confront hordes seeking to break into the fantasy world of Etheria and enslave all life in it!

The peculiarity of Dungeon Defenders is the presence of action/RPG elements. Players not only build defensive devices - towers, traps and obstacles, watching the battle from the sidelines, but also participate in the battle themselves, having previously chosen their hero from characters of several classes. Moreover, for participating in battles they receive new levels of pumping and various pieces of equipment.

4. Defense Grid: The Awakening

A game in the TD genre, using all the standard techniques. Moreover, she does this with incredible skill, which is why the gameplay, despite the lack of original and fresh ideas, looks surprisingly dynamic and interesting.

The appeal of Defense Grid: The Awakening is added by a very beautiful environment (the action takes place in a fantastic setting) and numerous special effects. It’s very nice that both the interface and controls here are also very user-friendly. In general, for lovers of simple, but interesting and rich TD, Defense Grid: The Awakening is perfect.

3. Plants vs. Zombies

Plants vs. Zombies is one of the best Tower Defense games on PC, consoles and mobile platforms. Moreover, surprisingly, the authors moved away from the tower defense standards towards simplifying the gameplay, but at the same time making it incredibly exciting and rich.

Not the least role in the popularity of the Plants vs. franchise. Zombies played with its cheerful setting, not without some madness: the living dead against warlike plants. Well, nice hand-drawn graphics coupled with sunny and positive vibes complete this whole quite pleasant picture.

2. Kingdom Rush

Another well-known Tower Defense with cartoon graphics and fun gameplay. It’s nice that the developers were able to successfully fit an epic fantasy setting and RPG elements into such a specific framework. In addition to the variety of towers, Kingdom Rush players have access to a dozen heroes, each of whom has several upgradeable skills.

An upgrade system is also provided for towers in Kingdom Rush. Also, to destroy opponents, players have access to gradually unlocked special abilities, such as a plague cloud, fire rain, or calling for reinforcements.

1. Orcs Must Die! 1-2

A popular game that is a hybrid of tower defense and role-playing action. Moreover, it is very difficult to say unequivocally which elements of the game are dominant here. Among the advantages, in addition to the most exciting gameplay, it is worth mentioning an interesting fantasy setting, nice graphics and mesmerizing music.

The surprisingly good (for traditional fantasy) plot also deserves no less flattering reviews. In addition to the story campaign, Orcs Must Die has other modes (including a multiplayer mode). It also provides the ability to adjust the difficulty, which will allow you to play through the game several times with interest.

When dangerous opponents try to attack your territory, it is worth building reliable defenses against them. Of course, these can just be high walls, but it is much more effective to use special defensive towers that shoot at approaching enemies and destroy them. Games in which you create defensive structures and fight off hordes of villains who are making their way into your area belong to the genre Tower Defense(Tower Defense). These are very interesting strategies, in which you need to show the best qualities of a military leader to win.

Spend your gaming budget wisely

There are a lot of games with defensive towers. They differ from each other in the type of terrain and the shape of the path along which the enemies move. They may have different victory conditions: sometimes strangers try to steal some value from your base, and then it is important not to let them out of your territory alive, but it also happens that it is necessary not to let enemies into the main abode at all. The variety of games also affects the features available in them. For example, your defensive towers can be improved within one level, becoming faster-firing and more powerful, but already in a new task they begin to be built in the form of the simplest structure and then upgrades must be started all over again. There are also online games in which large-scale improvements to towers are carried out between levels, after which all new buildings have higher characteristics. Moreover, for this type of upgrade you are given a special resource, the quantity of which is very limited, and you need to choose which type of tower to use it on.

Each tower is unique!

These could be structures of archers firing arrows at enemies, wizards casting destructive spells at opponents, simply individual animal figures wielding powerful weapons, futuristic defense systems firing incinerating laser beams at enemies.

Usually in one game of the Tower Defense genre there are several types of towers. They can be suitable for different enemies and have different ranges, which affects where they are installed and the number of buildings of the same type installed in a particular level.
