The Order of the Patriotic War, 1st and 2nd degree, was established by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 20, 1942. It was awarded to privates and commanders of the Red Army, NKVD troops and partisan detachments who showed courage, bravery and steadfastness in the battles for the liberation of the Motherland, as well as military personnel who, through their actions, contributed to the success of the operations of the Soviet troops.

This was the first Soviet award that appeared during the Great Patriotic War. This was the first order, which from the moment of its establishment was allowed to remain in the family of the recipient after his death. Until 1977, other orders were subject to return to the state.

During the war, 324,903 people were awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st degree; after the war, about 20 thousand more people. During the war, 951,652 people were awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, II degree, and after the war - 76,348 people. In 1985, on the 40th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. The anniversary Order of the Patriotic War was established, which was awarded to 7,534 thousand people.

Residents of Russia did not accept the new emblem of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War - a white dove against a blue sky, and are calling for the return of the long-standing symbol of the holiday - the red star and the Victory Banner. The other day, the Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communists of Russia party even sent an appeal to the Office of the President of Russia with a demand to remove the dove without waiting for the anniversary of May 9.

“The white dove is not suitable for this holiday - it symbolizes peace or reconciliation. The Soviet Union won Victory in the Great Patriotic War - we did not quarrel with the German people, Stalin spoke about this, but there can be no peace with fascism! Unfortunately, in this way we ourselves distort our history,” Suraikin said in an interview with Izvestia. In his opinion, the new symbol contradicts the meaning of the holiday - and this at a time when the country needs to resist attempts to rewrite the results of the Second World War.

Let us explain, the official emblem for the 70th anniversary of Victory Day looked different back in 2013 - in the form of the familiar Order of the Patriotic War, 1st degree, framed by golden laurel branches, between which was the golden inscription “70 years”. Its author was the famous heraldic artist, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation Nikolai Ukolov. The draft emblem was agreed upon with the Heraldic Council under the President of the Russian Federation and was approved on July 12, 2013 at a meeting of the Pobeda organizing committee chaired by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

However, the new “Guidelines for using the emblem of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War,” which appeared in November 2014, proposed a completely different vision of the festive logo - a white dove against a blue sky, with a St. George ribbon in the upper right corner and the inscription “ 1945-2015. Victory! 70 years old." “The dove is an easily recognizable symbol of peace. The color scheme of the ribbon is the colors of Victory, Memory; sky blue color is the color of New Life, Sky, Spring. Decorating the composition with the image of the St. George ribbon indicates the theme of the celebration. The use of the colors of the Russian tricolor emphasizes the high state status of the celebration.<…>The logo lacks traditional heavy, reused symbols. Thanks to this, it is light and as concise as possible. The symbolism of the logo cannot cause any negative associations; it is understandable to all generations,” the Guide says.

The emblem, designed by Honored Artist of the Russian Federation Nikolai Ukolov, contains traditional Soviet symbols of Victory.

Meanwhile, users take pictures with a pigeon on the streets of their cities and post them online - the posts are immediately overgrown with dozens of negative comments:

« White dove - a symbol of victory over fascism!? A symbol completely divorced from content. If it seems to you that I am embellishing or conjecturing that they want to decouple the Victory logo from its semantic meaning, then here is a description from the “Guide to using the emblem of the 70th anniversary of the Victory”“!

And this is about the symbol of VICTORY in the Great Patriotic War!!! With what sacrifices and efforts it was achieved, how terrible the war is... We don’t think, we are happy. More lightness and positivity, don’t stress!

Someone may exclaim - let me! In Christianity, this is a symbol of God's spirit; a dove with an olive branch flew to Noah, announcing the end of the flood. Yeah, but on the other hand, it is a symbol of humility, peace and cowardice...." - wrote one of the users on her LiveJournal page.

« Now that the St. George's ribbon has also become a symbol of resistance in the Donbass, the fight against very specific neo-fascists, hide it, as if in shame, in a corner

« Yeah... A war for people's minds, a war with history - that's what it is. First, the powers that be removed the red banner from the Victory Day celebrations, leaving only red flags. Then they removed the red color and left the St. George ribbon. Now, it seems, the St. George ribbon remains on the margins of the holiday, and the red banner is not even visible. Should we expect symbols for the next anniversary only with doves without a red banner or even a St. George ribbon? Does anyone notice that history is being stolen from us?“- one of the residents of the Krasnodar Territory is indignant on LiveJournal.

« The day before yesterday I held a kind of vote on my LiveJournal about the new logo. In general, people who spoke or voted are against it and find it unacceptable" Next, the blogger publishes comments on his survey in the post:

«… if the goal is to erase the memory, to forget about who won this Victory and why, then the logo is awesome. Because nothing connects him with the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Nothing at all. PS: oh, yes, another observation: some idiots, using the image of the Order of the Patriotic War, erase the central part with the hammer and sickle, writing in the numbers “70” instead. Hello to the Mausoleum hiders!»

« I probably didn't like it more than I liked it. It's a little pale, isn't it? Not in terms of color scheme, but in design.<…>Ribbon, dove, letters, once and done. IMHO».

« Complete bullshit. Why not red, not combat? The tone is not the same - some kind of snotty pacifist. Ideological sabotage, in short».

« Where are the warriors, where are the banners, where is the feat, where are the victors, where, in fact, is Victory itself?!!»

« The Victory Day logo must contain the Victory Banner, the banner under which our grandfathers and great-grandfathers fought and died for our future! Save the white dove for May 1st!»

« I believe that this logo is the next stage in the war with our history.<…>What is the essence of this war based on the example of the approval of this logo? First, they begin to celebrate Victory Day by closing the Mausoleum. Recently, it became prohibited to use Soviet symbols at some patriotic events (I’m talking now about the Immortal Regiment). Instead of the red banner, the St. George ribbon was actively popularized for several years (when talking about this ribbon, I mean its promotion in isolation from other symbols of Victory).<…>The next step will be a logo without the St. George's ribbon? If the speed of progress along this path remains the same, then this will happen in 2-3-5 years", says the user.

Let us note that the Communist Party of the Russian Federation is also waging “fights” for the preservation of Soviet symbols - in March of this year, deputies from the communist faction asked to preserve the red star as the emblem of the Russian Armed Forces and to use the five-pointed sign on all military paraphernalia - on uniforms, military equipment and banners.

At the same time, over the past month, several reports have appeared in the media about embarrassing situations related to the symbols of May 9. Thus, in Karelia they decided to completely exclude the use of Soviet symbols when celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Victory:

“If someone independently decides to issue a congratulation to veterans, create a poster or something else, he can use a star, hammer and sickle and other Soviet symbols at his discretion. But veterans will not see them on Kirov Square and other official holiday venues,” the Petrozavodsk administration explained to one of the local publications.

And in Krasnoyarsk, a scandal recently broke out - at the local competition “Best Confectioner of Siberia”, dedicated to the anniversary of the Victory, symbols associated with the Great Patriotic War were used when decorating cakes. The confectionery product, which was recognized as the best, contained images of front-line photographs, a funeral, an airplane, as well as the figure of a man holding a murdered child in his arms. After the scandal, the Minister of Culture of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Elena Pazdnikova, resigned. The regional government stated that the official left her post of her own free will and her departure had nothing to do with the scandal at the competition.

Let us add that in April 2015, the State Duma Committee on Defense proposed to introduce criminal liability for desecration of symbols of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, such as the Victory Banner, the Order of Victory and the St. George Ribbon. The State Duma believes that these symbols should be protected in the same way as the state flag and coat of arms. The corresponding changes are expected to be recorded in the Criminal Code, adding new norms to Article 329 “Desecration of the State Emblem of the Russian Federation or the State Flag of the Russian Federation.”

Note that the crime under Art. 329 of the Criminal Code “Desecration of the State Emblem of the Russian Federation or the State Flag of the Russian Federation” is punishable by restriction of freedom for a term of up to 1 year, or forced labor for the same period, or arrest for a term of 3 to 6 months, or imprisonment for a term of up to 1 year.

Description of reverse

On the disc there is an image of the Order of the Patriotic War, on the ring along the edge there is a laurel wreath and the inscription at the top: “70 YEARS”.

Just before the anniversary, on April 28, 2015, the bimetallic ten “Official emblem of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Victory” appeared in circulation. The minting was carried out by the St. Petersburg Mint. This is one of three bimetallic coins with a face value of 10 rubles issued for the Victory Day celebrations in 2015. The complete release of the anniversary series, in addition to the indicated bimetal, also includes sets of five-ruble coins.

The emblem drawing was created by the famous heraldic artist Nikolai Ivanovich Ukolov. On July 12, 2013, at a meeting of the Russian Pobeda Organizing Committee, the drawing was approved as the official emblem. Falerists will note Ukolov’s authorship in the creation of the honorary order and medal “70 years of victory in the Great Patriotic War.” The emblem was modified for placement on the coin field by A.D. Shchablykin. The laurel branch was transferred to a brass ring, the inscription “70 YEARS” appeared in its gap, and the Order of the Patriotic War was placed in the center of the cupronickel insert.

The circulation of 5,000,000 coins significantly exceeds the two millionth issue of five-ruble coins that immortalized the most significant battles of the Great Patriotic War. Therefore, collectors place the ten anniversary “The official emblem of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Victory” both in a standard album for bimetallic coins and in a specialized colorful album, which includes the entire series “70th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945”. If you are planning to create a collection of coins covering all anniversaries of the victory, then we advise you to remember the bimetal of 2000 and 2005, as well as the steel ten of 2010. Don't forget to pay attention to both the USSR anniversary rubles of 1965, 1975 and 1985, as well as the official set "50 years of the Great Victory".

The history of Russia has seen many wars. The most terrible, bloodiest, most decisive for the fate of the world is the war of 1941-1945. Victory in the Great Patriotic War showed the whole world not only the power of our weapons, but also the power of the Russian spirit. This victory is a defining milestone in the history of our country and region.

The memory of the war, its unimaginable horror and the boundless resilience of people, this memory is alive. It is in the memories and stories of participants in the events, in the research works of young local historians, in the expositions of school museums, halls and corners. Yellowed newspaper pages, well-read old books, faded photographs, letters from the front, military relics, archival documents are priceless evidence of our history that must be preserved.

In accordance with the Decrees and Orders of the President of the Russian Federation, the Russian Organizing Committee "Victory" coordinates the preparation and holding of events dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. For decoration of venues for festive events necessary without fail apply celebration logo and visual style development concept, developed by the Press Service and Information Department of the President of the Russian Federation and approved at a meeting of the Organizing Committee.

The main semantic element of the official logo of the celebration is a flying white dove on a sky blue background. An additional element of the graphic part of the logo is the image of the St. George Ribbon encircling a sky-blue plaque. The use of the colors of the Russian tricolor in the image and inscriptions emphasizes the high state status of the celebration.

The logo should be used exclusively as presented, without making any visual changes to it.

The official emblem of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Victory was approved at the 34th meeting of the Russian Organizing Committee “Victory” on July 12, 2013, chaired by the President of the Russian Federation V.V. Putin.

The celebration emblem is a multicolor image of the sign of the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st degree, framed by golden laurel branches. Between the branches there is a gold inscription: “70 YEARS”.

The emblem can be displayed in a single color version.

To decorate the venues for festive events, it is necessary to use the celebration logo and the concept of visual style development, developed by the Press Service and Information Department of the President of the Russian Federation and approved at a meeting of the Organizing Committee

On April 28, 2015, the Central Bank of Russia put into circulation the Jubilee coin of Russia with a face value of 10 rubles “The official emblem of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War”, the series “70th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.”

The reverse features an image of the emblem of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War (WWII): the Order of the Patriotic War is located in the center of the disk, and a laurel wreath is located around the circumference of the coin ring. At the top of the ring, near the edge, there is an inscription - “70 YEARS”.

The Great Patriotic War is the largest military conflict of the twentieth century, in which the USSR acted as the defender of its territories from Germany, which treacherously attacked in 1941. The Nazi war machine was designed for immediate success, but received unexpectedly desperate resistance, a long, exhausting war and a crushing defeat.

1,418 cruel days claimed the lives of about 27 million Soviet people, leaving mutilated cities and destroyed villages, destroyed monuments and a disorganized national economy. The victory announced in May 1945 was an event of the highest emotional intensity. In the year of the 70th anniversary of the historical triumph, the descendants of the Soviet people who went through the war continue to carry the banner of the winners of fascism and cherish the memory of the destroyed lives of their great-grandfathers.

In 2013, the official emblem of the upcoming celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Victory was approved, the basis of which is the image of the legendary Order of the Great Patriotic War in the golden border of a laurel wreath. The emblem was designed by the heraldic master - artist N. I. Ukolov. He also created sketches of anniversary awards for those who survived the terrible times of fighting, occupation, captivity, and exhausting work in the rear. The most important awards of 2015 were the medal and honorary order “70 Years of Victory.”
