And no matter how many supporters of the fact that the PC is the most universal platform for video games, there are a huge number of those who remain faithful to various consoles, such as the PS3 and the like. Of course, the computer is universal, but the set-top box has many of its advantages that are dubious for a PC - playing on a large screen, mobility, full immersion, and more. And if you decide to purchase a quality console, then your choice may be between ps3 and ps3 slim. What is the difference between them? And how are they similar? What to choose in the end? More on this below.

Gaming platform Sony PlayStation 3

The well-known company Sony has long been a success among avid gamers who choose quality gaming consoles around the world. Their Sony PlayStation 3 became an undisputed hit at the time and was an overwhelming success. Let's try to figure out why the Sony PlayStation 3 has become such a favorite console of many people.

The game station is a flashy black Sony-style box that weighs 5kg. Such a thing will not be so easy to knock off the table if someone accidentally yanks the power cord or joystick. The length of this unit 98 mm and the width is 325 mm... All this is done in a beautiful black gloss, which looks beautiful, albeit a little pretentious. The main thing is not to transfer it with fat fingers - there will be ugly prints on the case.

The body of the set-top box stands perfectly on its own: stable and confident. No special stand is needed, unlike its successor, the Sony PlayStation 3 SLIM. But about the latter a little further.

There are several versions with different hard drives. Available in 160, 80 or 40 GB sizes. Of course, the price will be different. SATA hard drive system, so if you want and a little skill, you can increase the volume using a screwdriver.

The Sony PlayStation 3's central processing unit is consuming enough power. This can be judged by the impressive power supply unit, the power of which is 280 watts. However, overheating of the console is an exception rather than a permanent minus.

Also, the console does not support games from Sony PlayStation 2 and does not accept Card Reader. Unfortunately, the developers did not fix these options in the next model either.

A good bonus for Sony PlayStation 3 is the ability to install other operating systems (Linux for example). Therefore, the variations in gaming products are slightly wider, depending on the installed system.

To replace Sony PlayStation 3, the company introduced its new brainchild - Sony PlayStation 3 SLIM. If you do not delve into the nuances and test hastily, then the average user will not notice any special changes. However, there are differences from the predecessor Sony PlayStation 3. We will describe them.

The visual difference in the external design is immediately visible. The color remains the classic black, but the gloss has disappeared. It was replaced by a matte tone. Of course, this did not affect the gameplay, but there is already variety. At least greasy fingerprints will not be visible on the case.

Also, the station itself has become lighter. Its weight is 3.2 kg, which significantly increases the mobile properties of the device. Together with the weight, the dimensions of the attachment have also decreased. Its length is 65 mm and the width is 290 mm... In terms of mobility, this is a good help - because now you can take your favorite console to a friend who has a large plasma. It takes up less space in a backpack, and it has become lighter in weight.

A slight disappointment was the fact that the new model is unstable - the Sony PlayStation 3 SLIM itself cannot stand. To do this, you need to purchase a special stand for it or already order it in the kit.

The hard drive is pleasantly pleased. It has become larger in volume. Sony PlayStation 3 SLIM is available with a 250 or 120 GB hard drive. Although the drives are also SATA, so by unscrewing a couple of screws, you can easily put the volume that you want yourself.

The company has supplied the processor on the Sony PlayStation 3 SLIM more nimble, but which consumes less power. Here the power supply has a power of 250 W, half of which is used by the set-top box processor. This is a natural plus, because you don't have to think about overheating at all. True, the difference in speed can only be found by running the latest games and testing both models. On the classic games that have proven themselves in the gaming world, the difference was not noticeable.

The weak point was the lack of perception of the Card Reader by the console and the inability to launch games from the Sony PlayStation 2. The developers also removed support for other operating systems in the model - now it will not work to transfer another system to the console.

Summing up

To summarize a little, the difference between consoles can be boiled down to the following:

Visual changes... Here the glossy color changed to matte, although it remained black.
Dimensions (edit)... The SLIM console itself has become slightly smaller and lighter in weight. 3.2kg versus 5kg Sony PlayStation 3.
Sony PlayStation 3 could stand on its own, in Sony PlayStation SLIM you need to get a special stand for stability.
Both consoles have SATA hard drives, but the SLIM version has increased the capacity to 250 GB. Although, if you wish, you can independently increase the hard disk in both versions.
Sony PlayStation 3 is more prone to overheating due to a weaker but electricity-hungry processor. Its unit has a power of 280 W, and in SLIM - 250 W, of which the latter consumes only half the power. However, the difference in performance can be felt only in very demanding games.
Both consoles do not support Sony PlayStation 2 games and do not see Card Reader, but Sony PlayStation SLIM also lacks the ability to install another operating system on its platform. Sony PlayStation 3 is more versatile in this regard and supports other operating systems.

As I promised in my blog, today I will prepare and publish a photo-review of the latest revision of the Sony PlayStation 3, according to NATO classification "super slim", in the maximum configuration with a 500 gigabyte hard drive.

As usual, in my review there will be at least a minimum of technical characteristics (this means there will not be any), which you yourself can read about on the Internet, and a maximum of high-quality photos and descriptions of personal feelings from the operation of the thinnest "bread bin". Also, in this article I will describe the disassembly of the PS3 Slim (more precisely, the procedure for removing the hard drive).

Appearance

Let's start with a top view.

Nice glossy plastic at the edges is slightly spoiled by the horizontal guide grooves that reduce the solidity.

At the ends, the plastic is more "budgetary", matte.

Agree, the grooves look much nicer when installed vertically.

We are already accustomed to the fact that the PS logo has stopped rotating since the days of the usual PS3 slim. By the way, from this perspective, Sonya resembles a futuristic stealth design.

The rear panel has a set of connectors already familiar to a sophisticated user.

There is a manufacturer's sticker on the bottom,

which shows that the console has the model number CECH-400 ... and is made in China.

There are air intake holes along the edge of the stand.

They are small because the console's power consumption and heat dissipation are also small.

And finally, I will not forget to mention the most important thing - the logo.

Unlike the PS3 slim, where it was concave, here the logo is convex, otherwise unchanged.

Drive compartment

And now about the most interesting thing - about the drive.

It opens like this - take the console.

Press the mechanical (oh horror!) Button to the left of the logo.

The drive cover moves to the left.

It has been noticed: when installed horizontally, the cover rattles terribly and moves away abruptly, when installed vertically - smoothly and almost silently. Paradox.

Pay attention - the bottom of the drive compartment is decorated with longitudinal stripes, like the carcass. Design…

We turn on "ZOOM" and lo and behold! ..

… There are two lenses in the drive head! One on DVD, the other on Blu-ray. And that means PS3 super slim owners can forget about drive problems. By the way, replacing a disc on a PS3 is quick and easy.

The lid is closed manually until it clicks.

Not very convenient, as well as the fact that now the PS3 menu does not have the "eject disc" function, since the process has become completely mechanized.

Installing the vertical stand on Sony PS3 super slim

We continue the seminar. The vertical stand is not included in the kit, but I advise you to get it immediately when buying a PS3 super slim, since all PS3 revisions, without exception, have a much longer life cycle in an upright position.

The stand is made in the form of a CD.

It's thick, aluminum, and solidly heavy.

To install, we need the left end of the console.

Remove the rubber plug and see the mounting hole.

There we screw in the stand bolt.

We install the rubber plug already in the stand.

Thus, there are no spare parts left.

The end result looks like this.

The console is extremely stable, which is good. But the questionable choice of silver is bad.

At least on my desktop, the silvery pancake clearly stood out from the general design of the console.

Well, we studied the prefix up and down. Now let's talk about how it works.

The noise level of the fan is slightly higher than that of the regular slim, the noise level of the drive is slightly lower than that of the regular slim.

Heat dissipation is extremely low. This allows the hope that the user never sees the YLOD.

But what's really annoying is manual disk change / installation.

The problem is that even with the stand fixed, this operation has to be done very carefully and with both hands.

It is especially difficult to adapt after switching from a regular Slim, and even harder from an almost silent mechanism for throwing a disk to FAT. I would not be surprised if during the first replacement operation you drop a phrase like: “What’s that! Fuck! "

PS3 super slim turned out to be a very good console with a reasonable balance of cost reduction and technical progress, however, not without certain extremes on the part of Sony manufacturers.

Cheap plastic, manual disk swapping and controversial design are bordered by dual lasers in the drive, a 500GB hard drive, and a cool aluminum vertical stand.

If you want to dive into the wonderful world of PlayStation 3 for the first time, I recommend starting this action with the super slim. The transition process from PS2 slim will be especially smooth, because in some ways the consoles are similar.

If you are an experienced owner of other PS3 revisions, especially the first FAT-modifications, I recommend not to rush to keep up with the progress - some "budget" limitations of the new model will certainly cause you certain complaints about the super slim developers.
