Walk forward and you will find the Soul of the Unknown Traveler, Halberd and Loincloth, next to the statue. The door can be opened from the other side, and this is another way through which you can get into the pit.

You need Mortician Ash. To find it, go to the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire, in the direction where the cemetery is (there are graves on the left side). Watch out for projectiles (if you talked to the cathedral giant, you'll be safe). Face the tree with the mark on it (at the front of the building), and turn left. The item you are looking for is not far from here, between the graves. Take it to the maid in Firelink Shrine and buy the Grave Key for 1500 souls (it will be added to your inventory once you extract the ashes).

Now that you have the key, go into the dungeons. Enter the previously described area full of enemies (if you unlocked the shortcut before this, the other entrance is behind the stone bridge, opposite the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire). Use the key to open the grate. The process of learning the bottom of the layout is the same.
