Instead, we, in the role of a magician, rush around the location, independently repelling the attacks of enemies and periodically setting up various cunning traps.

The game has several types of weapons, various magic, many traps, and all this can be improved by using skulls - a special currency issued for completing a level on a particular difficulty. The main difference is that towers and their upgrades here are maps that players need to find and upgrade. For each specific level, you will often have to change the deck, selecting the most optimal cards for passing. You can get cards in missions, in the daily lottery and when purchasing boosters (which, by the way, are purchased with in-game currency). Extra cards can be sold or used to improve towers and spells or increase their level.

Kingdom Rush Frontiers

Release date: 2016

In principle, if you are a fan of the previous installments, then you don’t need to read further - pick up the game and go into battle! There is no leveling up here as such, and players select their role in battle using equipment that needs to be crafted using resources. Protolife

Release date: 2018

Genre: tower defense, aliens, retro, pixel graphics, strategy, indie

Pixel Tower Defense with original mechanics, in which you, as colonists, have to fight against a proto-creature similar to crimson biomass, which sleeps during the day and grows at night. For this reason, the gameplay here can be divided into two phases: during the day we try to recapture the territory, and at night we try to protect everything we have.

Defensive structures in the game are built from blocks, which can be arranged in different ways to create different buildings and towers with different characteristics. An unusual enemy - growing living biomass can seep into even the smallest gap in the defense, so its spread should be constantly monitored. Control here is carried out directly through the construction robot (even without the help of a mouse!), which imposes some restrictions on the gameplay - if you get carried away with construction on one side of the base, you will have to run for a long time to the other side, not having time to break through the defense.

Now it's time to talk about the best games in the genre, which is one of the most popular in the App Store. Tower defense immediately caught on on mobile devices thanks to simplified controls that traditional strategy games couldn't boast of. Today we bring to your attention seven of the best games in this genre that debuted in the app store over the past two years. Go!

1. Anomaly 2

Developer/Publisher: 11 bit Studios/Chillingo
Version: 1.3.1

The Anomaly series instantly fell in love with a huge number of players. Excellent technological graphics, a fascinating plot and an endless fight against alien invaders - these are the main features of the entire series and in particular. The game is different from typical tower defense games in terms of gameplay. Let's just say this is tower defense in reverse. Players do not have to build towers, but overcome them using a squad of combat vehicles. Excellent tactical mode and variety of units included. But there is also multiplayer available...

2. Royal Revolt 2

Developer/Publisher:flaregames
Version: 1.6.0

Next up is another original Tower Defense - a sequel to the fairly popular strategy Royal Revolt. The second part retained the features of the gameplay, which combines the “reverse mechanics” of Anomaly and elements of classic strategies. The player must not only break through the enemy’s defenses, but also use numerous units that are constantly being built at the base to do this. In addition, the hero himself takes part in the battle, who represents a very formidable force on the battlefield. many players liked it less than, but both games deserve close attention for their dynamics and original discoveries in gameplay.

3. Plants vs. Zombies 2

Developer/Publisher: PopCap/Electronic Arts
Version: 3.2.1

There are probably no people who do not know about the famous confrontation between plants and zombies. The game is a phenomenon, comparable in its popularity to the unforgettable Angry Birds. It is based on the classic Tower Defense mechanics, transferred to a small plot of land where the player needs to plant plants to counteract numerous zombies. I took the second part under my wing Electronic Arts, which means the presence of in-app purchases and other little things that are unpleasant for players. But the game mechanics themselves have made a qualitative step forward, and the gameplay has become very diverse. One of the best games on the App Store of all time.

4. Kingdom Rush Origins

Developer/Publisher: Ironhide Game Studio
Version: 1.2

Next in our selection is a follower of one of the best games in the genre - Kingdom Rush Origins. The classic gameplay, coupled with a fantasy setting, has long appealed to all fans of tower defense, but in the Kingdom Rush series these components are elevated to the absolute. Accordingly, we have excellent gameplay, many units and possible tactics, as well as nice graphics. The only drawback that the developers stubbornly maintain is the division of the game into versions for iPhone and iPad. An extremely strange solution in a modern app store. However, this has a very small effect on the popularity of the game.

5. Bardbarian

Developer/Publisher: Bulkypix
Version: 1.4

Another original representative of the genre. Here we are talking not so much about protecting the towers, but about protecting the village from all evil spirits by a barbarian metal worker. The original concept and a number of unusual discoveries in the gameplay make the game extremely interesting. Several types of units can come to the hero's aid, but predictably the most powerful weapon in the game is music. In general, the game is available for free, so it is highly recommended to check it out. There aren't that many original Tower Defense games out there.

6.Castle Doombad

Developer/Publisher:
Version: 1.1.2

The enemy is doing the same, and both sides are constantly sending troops against each other, trying to break the enemy's defenses while strengthening their own defenses. 2. Kingdom Rush

Another well-known Tower Defense with cartoon graphics and fun gameplay. It’s nice that the developers were able to successfully fit an epic fantasy setting and RPG elements into such a specific framework. In addition to the variety of towers, Kingdom Rush players have access to a dozen heroes, each of whom has several upgradeable skills.

An upgrade system is also provided for towers in Kingdom Rush. Also, to destroy opponents, players have access to gradually unlocked special abilities, such as a plague cloud, fire rain, or calling for reinforcements.

1. Orcs Must Die! 1-2

A popular game that is a hybrid of tower defense and role-playing action. Moreover, it is very difficult to say unequivocally which elements of the game are dominant here.
