Russian folk game "Burners"

Most ancient children's games are group games. This is due to the fact that traditional Russian the family was large. Children in the community were raised together and spent a lot of time with peers. Each a game had its own deep hidden meaning, being ritual and symbolizing the forces of nature.

« Burners» - one of the popular, but, unfortunately, forgotten Russian ancient amusements. In the 19th century, young people aged 16-18 took part in it. During the game, the young people looked closely at each other, showed sympathy, and showed signs of attention. Later a game has become purely children's play. It is fascinating for children aged 5 - 7 years.

Purpose of the game: to unite the team; develop in children the ability to concentrate, speed and dexterity; develop communication skills.

Progress of the game

An odd number of participants gathers, optimally 7-13 people. The more children, the merrier.

Everyone recites any rhyme in unison, and the one who says the last word is the one who leads. « Burner» (in the old days the word lead was also called the word toil).

The rest form pairs and hold hands. In ancient times, when young people took part in the game, a guy would pair up with a girl. Now this rule is not observed.

Couples stand one after another in a row-column. « Burner» turns away from the other children. Now you need to draw a line. It should be located 5-10 meters from the leader. The younger the age children playing, the shorter the distance from the leading « burners» to the drawn line.

All participants, holding hands in pairs, sing together song:

"Burn, burn clearly,

So that it doesn't fade away.

Stay at your hem

Look at the field

The trumpeters are going there

Yes, they eat rolls.

Look at the sky:

The stars are burning

The cranes are screaming.

One, two, don't miss it,

And run like fire!”

The last line of the song is a signal for the active action of the children from the extreme pair. They separate their hands and quickly run towards the cherished line. The leader must catch the hand of one of the pair. If he succeeds, he pairs up with the one he didn’t catch up with. The caught child becomes « burner» . If it was not possible to catch up with anyone, then the leader does not change. Pair "escaped" players unite behind the line, then stand at the beginning of the common column. If « burner» neither fast nor dexterous, he remains in the role of leader for a long time, and the others cheer him on. But it would be advisable if the driver was changed after three uncaught pairs, again paying off according to the counting table.

IN « burner» children can play long enough. Collective a game– it’s not only fun and funny, but also instructive. Such games bring enormous benefits to both children’s health and their emotional state.

To have fun playing
You need to pump up the ball.
And the boys and girls
The ball will be hit loudly.

Real athletes
They will run for recess.
They will jump and jump
And catch up with each other.

We will inflate the ball deftly
You just need to have the skill.
Press harder
Run away quickly!

Various games with the ball
We'll definitely start.
And in “Frog” and “Dog”,
In “Rucheek”, and in “Fast Ball”.

I reached the turn,
Rolled out of the gate.
Jumped over the yard
He escaped through the fence.

Spins quickly and flies!
Who will catch him now?
Hurry up and catch up
And tell your neighbor.

If, nevertheless, the player managed to catch up and make fun of him, then the drivers change roles.

  • Game "Shootout"

Objectives: develop dexterity, attentiveness, speed of reaction.

Outdoor games while walking

When walking with children in kindergarten or after-school activities in elementary school, the teacher needs to keep the children occupied with something: an excellent solution is to organize outdoor games while walking. First, the teacher introduces the children to various games, and later the children themselves, dividing into groups, will be able to decide which game they want to play. Outdoor games have a beneficial effect on the development of the child's body and strengthening the immune system. And the time of the walk flies by.

Before starting the game, the teacher needs to pay attention to the condition of the playing field: are there any unnecessary objects, splinters and anything else that could interfere with children’s play and create a dangerous environment - unfortunately, you can find them not only on the street, but also on the playground of a school or kindergarten a lot of trash.

The teacher blows the whistle again, and train movement resumes.

  • Outdoor game "Blind Man's Bluff"

Objectives: developing dexterity, developing the ability to navigate in space, observation.

  • Game "Day and Night"

Tasks: practice running in different directions, act on a signal.

The teams stand at a distance of two steps from the drawn line, with their backs to each other. At the command of the presenter, for example, “Day!” the team with the appropriate name begins to catch up. Children from the “night” team must have time to run beyond the conditional line before their opponents have time to stain them. The team that manages to stain the most players from the opposing team wins.

  • Game "Baskets"

Objectives: practice running after each other, develop speed, reaction speed, and attentiveness.

Description: Two presenters are selected. One of them will be the catcher, the other will be the fugitive. All remaining participants are divided into pairs and join hands, creating something like a basket. The players scatter in different directions, and the leaders separate; the catcher tries to catch up with the fugitive. The fugitive must run between the pairs. What are the rules of the Russian folk game burner? and got the best answer

Answer from Zhenok[guru]
Young people in Rus' loved to play burners. Apparently, in ancient times this game was surrounded by lights - hence the name.
Burners
This is, one might say, a “classic of the genre.” Players sit in pairs, holding hands and forming a column. The driver stands in front. Everyone speaks loudly or chants in chorus:
Burn, burn clearly
So that it doesn't go out.
Burn, burn clearly
So that it doesn't go out.
Look at the sky -
Birds are flying.
The bells are ringing!
One, two, three - run!! !
Another variant:
: Burn, burn clearly,
So that it doesn't go out.
And one, and two, and three.
Last couple, run!
At the word “run,” the last couple standing runs around the column and stands in front. The driver must try to get ahead of one of the runners and take his place. The one who does not have enough space becomes the driver and “burns.” Instead of the words “last pair”, the driver can say: “fourth pair” or “second pair”. Therefore, everyone playing must be very attentive and remember where they stand in the column.
Children join hands to form pairs.
Couples stand one after another in a “stream”.
In front of the “stream”, a few steps away, stands the leader with a handkerchief in his hands.
At the end of the song, the children standing in the last pair open their arms and scatter along the “stream”.
They run one by one to the leader, trying to grab a handkerchief.
The first one who managed to do this remains with the scarf as the leader, and the other two (the former leader and the one who did not have time to grab the scarf) form a pair and become the first in the stream.
The game continues with the next pair of children
A popular variation of the burner game. Only the players do not stand in a formation (well), but in a circle, in a round dance, turning their faces away from the center. Everyone stands with their hands down, only the leader holds the handkerchief at arm's length. Two players come out of the round dance, who either themselves expressed a desire, or the draw indicated them. They must run in different directions from the leader, outside the round dance ring. The command to run is the beginning of the song.
The song sounds, the players run. Whoever takes the handkerchief first wins. He gets into line, passing the handkerchief to the player whose place he takes. He goes with a handkerchief to the leader, next to whom the defeated runner is already standing: he has to run again, compete in speed with the player chosen by the winner.
It should be noted that the song “Burn, Burn Clearly” is also sung when playing regular burners. There may be other words:
Burn, burn clearly
So that it doesn't go out.
The bird is flying
The wheel turns.
Where to snuggle
It will remain there.

Hello! Here is a selection of topics with answers to your question: What are the rules of the Russian folk game burner?

Answer from Anna***[guru]
Rules of the game
An open place is chosen for the game - a lawn, a clearing, a wide street in front of the house, a spacious yard.
The players stand in pairs one after another. In front of everyone, at a distance of two steps, stands the driver, the burner (burner), with his back to the players.
The players chant the words:
Burn, burn clearly
So that it doesn't go out.
Stay at your hem
Look at the field
The trumpeters are going there
Yes, they eat rolls.
Look at the sky:
The stars are burning
The cranes shout:
- Gu, gu, I'll run away.
One, two, don't be a crow,
And run like fire!
After these words, those standing in the last pair run from both sides along the column. The burner is trying to tarnish one of them. If the running players managed to take each other's hands before he stains one of them, then they stand in front of the first pair, and the burner leads again. The game repeats itself.
If the burner manages to stain one of those running in a pair, then he stands with him in front of the entire column, and the one who is left without a pair burns.
Conditions:
* The Burner only catches up with fleeing players when they run past him. He has no right to look back and spy which couple is about to run past him. Otherwise, the pair preparing to run may exchange turns with another pair or places with each other.
* No one should start running before the last word has been spoken.
* The burner can burn those running only until they join hands.
* Fifteen to twenty meters ahead of the burner, a place is marked in advance until which the running couple should not join their hands again.
* The players can agree that the burner should not chase any of the runners, but always the guy and, having caught up with him, can pair up with the girl, while the caught one goes to “burn” - or vice versa.

Answer from On Indyukov[guru]
Burners, called in other places: Separations, Razgars, are sent in the summer. People gather to play Burners in the evening, in a wide yard, or in a meadow, or on the street in front of the house. Young people, more girls and single men, take the lead in this game. The players condemn one of them, by lot, to burn - to a difficult position. All the others mate, that is, they become pairs, one after the other. The burner stands in front of the steam, motionless, not turning back, forward, or to the side. At this time, the players scatter in different directions. The burner chases them. If he manages to separate them, to catch the mistaken one, then his position no longer continues, or, for his failure, he must burn again, at least the game is repeated up to 100 times. “The game is not without deception,” the old ladies say - and that’s exactly true! How many tricks have been invented for the unfortunate sufferer: he can be deceived every minute.

Hello! Here are other threads with similar questions.

BURNERS

Why do I start with the burners? Maybe because this is one of the oldest and most widespread games in Russia. Previously, burners were played in both villages and cities, everyone played - from children to young adults.
And even Pushkin, my favorite poet, mentions burners in “The Peasant Young Lady” and “Eugene Onegin.” Couldn't he play them himself?..
Before starting to describe this game, I would like to introduce you to what was written about burners, and generally about Russian folk games, by one of Pushkin’s contemporaries.
“... our grandmothers provided their children with the most frisky, sweetest game - Burners - to flutter around the meadow with friends and fellows... All over Great Russia they give preference to this game. Our relatives - from the villager to the boyar - are equally amused by the Burners.
In modern life we often hear how Russian games are called peasant games, the same games that in the old life amused the Russians, our ancestors, fathers and mothers... It would be in vain for us to imagine that the old Russian life existed without joy: then there was still entertainment more, and moreover, public entertainment. True, there were no theaters then; but for that the whole square, dotted with people, was free for amusements, for fun, for delight; for this reason, entire courtyards were filled with cheerful players... People of all classes were having fun in the squares; there were intricate, extensive games here... Everyone had fun, everyone lived freely, according to Russian.”
By the way, even kings sometimes had fun with burners. Gavrila Romanovich Derzhavin describes how one day in Tsarskoe Selo, Catherine II’s secretary of state told him: “The Empress is somewhat boring, and the courtiers don’t start any games, perhaps, brother, let’s go and at least start the burners.” And how he chased the Grand Duke Alexander Pavlovich and, “catching up with him in a slippery meadow, sloping towards a pond, he fell and hit the ground so hard that he became pale, like a dead man.” This is the same poet Derzhavin who, already a very old man, was so moved by the poems of the young Pushkin.
I would like to add that even during my childhood, burners were still very common, especially in villages. And no one considered this game to be ancient, much less forgotten.
Nowadays they rarely play burners, only some counselors in pioneer camps start this game.
Why don’t we play with the burners ourselves, right in the yard? It's so simple!
Many of you can say that even your parents don’t remember this game and there is no one to teach you. I know. That's why I decided to write this book for you. Truly, burners are worth it to once again become one of our favorite games!
I learned this game in the village when I was not yet ten years old. And so we, such little kids, played burners with the big guys.
The game is very simple and not very tedious. Therefore, burners can be played after other, difficult and intense games, or when a company with many girls gathers.
The smallest number of players is nine people, that is, four couples and one “burner”. It's no longer interesting to play three pairs. Well, it’s best when there are from six to ten couples, that is, from 13 to 21 people, including the burner. As you noticed, the number of participants should always be odd. Playing with more than ten pairs will also not be so fun, since each pair will have to wait quite a long time for their turn.
But in general, of course, if there are a lot of you and everyone really wants to run to the burners, then you can split into two games, just go further away so as not to disturb each other.
It is advisable that each pair be made up of a boy and a girl, then the game will be more interesting. Well, if at first there are, for example, two boys in a pair, then this will not last long, since during the game the pairs are constantly mixed. I don’t advise you to count to determine the burner - the ceremony will be too long. It would be better for someone to volunteer to “burn” or, in extreme cases, whoever came up last should be the one to drive.
After the burner has been found, everyone else joins hands in pairs and lines up behind each other at a distance of one step.
The burner stands in front, two or three steps from the first pair, with his back to them. Once he has taken his place, he is no longer allowed to look back or look around.
The game begins with everyone singing the following song to the burner in unison:
Burn, burn clearly
So that it doesn't go out.
Look at the sky -
Birds are flying
The bells are ringing!
If anyone doesn’t know what the motive of this song is, ask your grandparents, they probably know it well.
When the words “look at the sky - the birds are flying, the bells are ringing,” the burner must look at the sky, pretending that he really believes this fable about the birds with the bells.

And at this time the last pair is already ready.
As soon as the song ends, they separate their hands and rush headlong to run forward, one to the right, the other to the left of the players standing in pairs.
The task of the runners is to run past the burner and again join hands in front of him. It is possible not in front, but on the side; in this case, one of the pair needs to manage to run in front of the burner and give a hand to the other. You can’t just connect behind. And you can't run back.
If the runners manage to grab hands again, they calmly walk back and take a step ahead of the first pair.
And the burner must try to catch someone running. Please note that to do this, he needs not only to catch, but also to prevent them from running away, so that they cannot shake hands with each other. The burner does not have to actually catch, it is enough to stain, that is, touch the runner with his hand. If he succeeds, he forms a new pair with the caught one, and they stand in front of other pairs.
And the one who is not caught remains without a pair and must “burn.” They sing the song to him, and again the last couple runs.
But if the burner does not catch anyone, then he again takes his place two or three steps ahead and tries to catch someone from the next pair.
The game can last as long as you like, but it can’t be finished before all the pairs have run at least once.
I would like to draw your attention to the fact that when choosing a place to play, you need to make sure that there is more space in front for running. In addition, the place should be, if possible, level, without any hummocks, stones, tall grass and similar inconveniences. The last couples run away, take the lead, and the whole game moves forward by itself. Therefore, if you have little space, then after each dash all pairs should retreat back.
And the last note: the caught one cannot escape from the burner.
Well, that’s all about the rules, it seems.
Now I’ll tell you something from my own observations and experience of playing burners, however, this dates back to the time when I was already fourteen or fifteen years old.
What's the best way to run as a couple? It is not at all necessary to immediately rush headlong, as I described earlier. Some, on the contrary, walk up to the burner at a walk, creep up silently and only then, with a wink at each other, launch themselves at full speed! This confuses the burner, and he is sometimes late in pursuit. Moreover, the burner has no right to turn back or move until the runners catch up with him. But remember that runners should not turn around and run backwards. And don’t run too far to the side, there’s no one there to give you a hand...
And we had one more trick. When you assume that the burner wants to catch you, but you have absolutely no need for it, you need to change places with your partner before running. Then the burner will immediately rush to the right, and you run to the left! By the time he rushes around and figures out what’s what, you will already have time to grab hands.
But rearranging whole pairs - closer or further - is not allowed. How you stood up at first and how you ran - stick to this order throughout the game.
And remember that the main thing in burners is not to run away from the burner, but to pair up again. Otherwise they scatter far, forgetting about their mate, then they give a lot of time and opportunities for the burner to catch up. Therefore, do not lose sight of your partner or partner for a moment, trying to “catch” with your hands as quickly as possible.
And look at your feet when you run so as not to stumble. Here it’s a shame not only because you fell into the hands of a burner, but it’s annoying that everyone will laugh.
Don’t be surprised, but sometimes it happens that the burner only pretends that he is trying to catch someone, rushes to one or the other of the runners, and everything is unsuccessful. He is being cunning, he is just waiting for a couple to run, in which there is someone whom he really wants to catch. Then he catches with all his might, but then he can stand in a pair, holding hands with the one he likes.
And some of these cunning people even deliberately stand behind the couple they are interested in, in order to enter the game just in front of them. And when the turn comes to run, he tries to make sure that he himself gets to burn. And then he catches whoever he wants.
It also happens that someone, as if by chance, wants to succumb to the burner, and he will take it and catch another...
In general, this game has a lot of possibilities and surprises, and that’s what makes it interesting.

But I must tell you that sometimes the burner has a hard time. Another time, many couples will run by, but he still can’t catch anyone! The poor burner is out of breath, running around until he gets himself a mate. So there is no way to yawn here! It is not for nothing that in the old days it was believed that “to burn is a difficult position.”
It’s good if someone decides to succumb to him, as if by accident. Now I am no longer surprised that it was not difficult for us to play with the big guys, we never burned out for a long time. And it’s useful for you to know that the more often the burners change, and therefore changes occur in pairs, the more interest there is in the game. Therefore, I can advise you: when big and small, good runners and unimportant ones, play together, agree that you can burn no more than five times. If you couldn't catch anyone from the fifth pair, choose any of them and stand in a row. And let the rest burn.
Well, and finally, for older readers, I’ll tell you how in the old days grown-up boys and girls played burners. I myself, of course, did not play like this, so I will give here a description as it is given in one old book.
“...Couples are usually made up of a gentleman and a lady. The gentleman who, when running, only catches the lady, always burns...
I'm burning, I'm burning, damn it! - says the burner.
Who are you burning for? - asks the lady from the last couple.
For you, my soul, a beautiful maiden!
Do you love?
I love.
Will you buy it?
I'll buy it.
“Buy,” says the lady and, having separated from her partner, runs forward.”
Here the burner’s concern is to win the lady away from the gentleman who was paired with her. And the one left without a partner must find a new lady or try to win back the one he was with before.
Here, apparently, all the rules and tricks that I already spoke about when describing our childish burners also apply.

Burners is a very ancient game. Therefore, I would like to at least briefly tell you about its origin.
Russian historians of the last century directly associated burners with the customs of the pagan Slavs.
Every year, on the longest day of the summer solstice - June 23 - the Slavs had the holiday of Yarila (and later Kupala), dedicated to the Sun. In the evening, our distant ancestors - the Slavs - gathered on the banks of the rivers, lit fires for night games, jumped over the fire and swam, “to meet the rising luminary in purity.” On the same night, the “kidnapping” of the girls took place.
In our most ancient chronicle - “The Tale of Bygone Years, where did the Russian land come from” - it is said about this: “I go to the games, to the dancing, and to all the demonic games, and that wife’s wife.” Historian S. M. Soloviev adds: “The game of the burner best resembles this snatching.”
As you understand, these words refer to a more ancient type of burner, where a guy can only catch a girl.
Where did the name of the game come from - burners?
The Russian historian, famous collector of folk tales A. N. Afanasyev writes about this:
“In the epic language of folk songs... it is sung:
It is not the fire that burns, it is not the resin that boils,
And the zealous heart burns and boils
for the red girl...
The burners begin with the onset of spring, when the goddess Lada was glorified, when nature itself enters into its blessed union with the thunder god and the earth is accepted as its kind. Obviously, this game dates back to ancient times."
Well, have you visited the corner of your soul in the unimaginable distance of past centuries, felt your native ancestors?
Now let's go back to a time not so distant and move on to the next game.

Short story

Burners were not originally a child's game. It was played by single guys and unmarried girls, and the leader was always a guy and he could only catch girls. This was one of the ways to meet or choose a bride.

The emergence of this game is associated with pagan holidays and rituals: the meeting of spring, “when the goddess Lada, the patroness of marriage and childbirth, was glorified, when nature itself enters into its blessed union with the god of thunder and the earth is accepted as its clan,” or with the holiday of Yarila or Ivan Kupala - on the day of the summer solstice. “Gorki” was often played on holidays or when a lot of people simply gathered. Over time, this game became only for children, which has remained true to this day.

Description

Burners is an active ancient Slavic game in which the person standing in front catches, at a signal, other participants running away from him in pairs. The burners began with the onset of spring. The name comes from the song accompanying the game: “Burn, burn clearly so that it doesn’t go out.”

The word burners goes back to the verb “burn”, and initially, apparently, in the meaning of “to love, to suffer from love”, characteristic of folk poetry: “It is not the fire that burns, it is not the resin that boils, but the heart that burns and boils zealously for the red maiden...”.

In different areas there are other names for burners: separation, heat, burnt, burnt, oprel, burn-oak and burn-stump.

Rules

An open place is chosen for the game - a lawn, a clearing, a wide street in front of the house, a spacious yard.

The players stand in pairs one after another. In front of everyone, at a distance of two steps, stands the driver, the burner (burner), with his back to the players.

The players chant the words:

Burn, burn clearly

So that it doesn't go out.

Stay at your hem

Look at the field

The trumpeters are going there

Yes, they eat rolls.

Look at the sky:

The stars are burning

The cranes shout:

- Gu, gu, I’ll run away.

One, two, don't be a crow,

And run like fire!

Burn, burn clearly so that it doesn’t go out!
Look at the sky - the birds are flying,
The bells are ringing,
Look - don't be a crow, run like fire!

After these words, those standing in the last pair run from both sides along the column. The burner, without turning around, tries to stain one of them. If the running players managed to take each other's hands before he stains one of them, then they stand in front of the first pair, and the burner leads again. The game repeats itself.

If the burner manages to stain one of those running in a pair, then he stands with him in front of the entire column, and the one who is left without a pair burns.

  • The Burner only catches up with fleeing players when they run past him. He has no right to look back and spy which couple is about to run past him. Otherwise, the pair preparing to run may exchange turns with another pair or places with each other.
  • No one should start running before the last word has been spoken.
  • The burner can burn the runners only until they join hands.
  • Fifteen to twenty meters ahead of the burner, a place is marked in advance until which the running couple should not join their hands again.
  • The players can agree that the burner should not chase any of the runners, but always the guy and, having caught up with him, can pair up with the girl, while the caught one goes to “burn” - or vice versa.
